The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed it will look to ban Indonesia from hosting major sporting events after the country barred Israeli gymnasts from competing in last week's world championships.
The committee said that Indonesia's refusal to issue Israeli athletes visas for the event undermined the "fundamental principles of non-discrimination, autonomy and political neutrality that govern the Olympic Movement".
It said it would instruct all sporting federations under its purview not to organise "any international sports events or meetings" in Indonesia as a result.
"All eligible athletes, teams and officials must be able to take part in international competitions without any form of discrimination by the host country," said the IOC.
In response, Yael Arad, president of the Olympic Committee of Israel, said: "This decisive action sends a clear message against Indonesia’s disgraceful behaviour.
"Global sport is built on rules, values, and the absolute commitment to equality and fair play.
"Israeli athletes will continue to stand proudly on the world’s biggest stages, demonstrating excellence and integrity."
And, praising IOC President Kirsty Coventry, she added: "Her clear and principled stance in defence of fairness and basic decency strengthens the foundations of international sport."
