Israel is home to one of the top 25 tourist destinations in the world, according to a leading travel website.
Trip Advisor released its annual ranking of holiday spots this month and placed Jerusalem at number 13, above London and Rio de Janeiro.
The website described Jerusalem as a place of profound cultural and historical significance, pointing out the city was the location of the Western Wall and Temple Mount.
It recommended "seeing the major sights, but also [leaving] plenty of time to walk through the streets and simply immerse yourself in the daily life of such an ancient and revered place."
Petra, in Jordan, was ranked number 24 on the list and was the only other Middle Eastern location highlighted.
Last year Trip Advisor named Israel one of its Top 10 culture and sightseeing destinations, while Lonely Planet said Tel Aviv was the third best city in the world.
