Charedim can be drafted into Israel’s army from now following an overhaul of the military exemption law.
Israel’s Defence Minister Ehud Barak made the order as the Tal Law, a controversial piece of legislation that has been in place for a decade, expired on Wednesday.

The Israeli Supreme Court had ruled against an extension to the draft exemption.
The issue has been one of the most contentious and divisive topics in Israel this year and the country’s coalition government to fall apart.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the decision as to whom and how many people to draft would be left to the Israeli military. But he promised: “It will draft.”

The IDF now has a month to decide how to enact a “practical plan” for conscripting Israel’s strictly Orthodox.
