School has been cancelled in Israeli communities close to the Gaza border after rockets were fired overnight and an Israeli officer was killed on a mission into the Palestinian territory.

Seven Palestinians were reported to have died in the latest outbreak of violence including a Hamas commander.

Overnight, 17 rockets were launched from Gaza in retaliation for the raid, three of which were intercepted by Israeli anti-missile defences.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short his visit to Paris for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War and returned home on Sunday.
