Hebrew University recognised by Times Higher Education list

articlemain

An Israeli university is one of only two institutions in the Middle East to appear on an annual list of the top 100 universities around the world.

Hebrew University of Jerusalem was named in the 71-80 category – rankings beyond 50 are grouped in tens - of the annual Times Higher Education world reputation rankings.

The only other university in the wider geographic region on the list was the Middle East Technical University in Turkey.

Hebrew University, which has a student body of some 23,000, will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2018, although it did not officially open until 1925.

Although not the oldest of Israel's educational establishments – that honour belongs to the Technion in Haifa – its establishment marked the realisation of one aspect of the Zionist dream. Its first board of governors was made up of figures including Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, Martin Buber, and Chaim Weizmann.

Eight Hebrew University graduates or academics have been awarded the Nobel prize, while four of the country's former prime ministers were students there.

Last year it appeared in 22nd place in the Centre for World University Rankings's annual list.
