Khalil al-Hayya, acting co-chair of Hamas' political bureau, has seemingly gone back on the terms of the US-backed peace deal.

While negotiations are still ongoing, the framework of the Trump plan would see Hamas disarm after the last hostages are returned, with the IDF withdrawing from Gaza only after this process is completed.

But, in an interview with Al Jazeera, al-Hayya said that the question of disarmament is "linked to the presence of the occupation and aggression."

He also stated that the group would only lay down its arms "if the occupation ends".
