On Tuesday, the IDF dropped a large number of bombs on an underground compound beneath the European Hospital where Sinwar was believed to be hiding.
Israeli forces proceeded to bomb the area several more times in an attempt to prevent anyone from approaching the tunnel hideout.
Sinwar became the leader of Hamas after his older brother, and the architect of the attack on October 7, 2023, Yahya Sinwar, was killed by military forces in Rafah in October last year.
The de facto terror chief was jailed by Israel in the 1990s for nine months and spent an additional three years detained in a Palestinian Authority prison in Ramallah, where he escaped in 2000 before returning to the Gaza Strip.
In 2006, he took part in the kidnapping of IDF soldier Gilad Shalit, who was later freed in exchange for the release of his brother, Yahya Sinwar, among others, from Israeli prison.
