Israel's Ha'aretz newspaper has named a new editor-in-chief. Aluf Benn, a political journalist and columnist, has been at the paper for more than two decades.

He replaces Dov Alfon, who has served three years as editor-in-chief.

Mr Benn, whose work has been published around the world, has covered almost every key event in modern Israeli history.

The 46-year-old, who gained an MBA at the prestigious Kellogg Institute of America's Northwestern University, is the son of the Israel Prize-winning Israeli poet Aryeh Sivan.

Mr Benn said he was thrilled to take on the top job at the left-wing paper and lead it in "fulfilling Haaretz's public mission as a watchdog of Israeli democracy".

Ha'aretz, which is published daily in both English and Hebrew, was founded in 1918.
