The two teams finished goalless after extra time in the semi-final play-off

Israel have missed out on a place in next year’s Euro 2020 after losing on penalties to Scotland in Glasgow on Thursday night.

The Scots won their first ever shootout 5-3 in the semi-final play-off in a deserted Hampden Park, after Israeli striker Eran Zahavi’s first penalty was saved by keeper David Marshall.

After extra time, the teams were still in goalless deadlock.

Scotland will now go on to meet Serbia in the final of the qualifiers to reach next year’s cup.

Israel would have been hopeful after holding Scotland to a 1-1 draw in Glasgow last month in the Uefa Nations League competition.

But both sides had been affected by coronavirus, with Israel losing six players to positive tests and three of the Scotland squad in quarantine.

The two sides will meet again next month in Israel for the return match in the Nations League.
