June Bernicoff, who with husband Leon, was one of stars of Channel 4's Gogglebox, has died at the age of 82 following a short illness.

The Bernicoffs were the first couple to be cast for the show in 2013 and their affectionate bickering became one of its most popular features, propelling them to national celebrity. She left Gogglebox after Leon's death in late 2017, going on to write a book about their 60-year love affair. This week's episode was dedicated to her memory.

The couple met at teacher training college in Liverpool. In a JC interview in 2014, they recalled that when Leon proposed to June, a non-Jew, it caused problems with his family. "But I loved June so much I couldn't do without her."

They weathered the storm, Leon reflecting: "I think our girls had the best upbringing. They went to shul with their grandparents - and to the chapel in Wales."

A Channel 4 statement said the couple's "warmth, with and contrasting personalities endeared them to the nation during the first ten series".
