Ehud Olmert, former Israeli Prime Minister, has been released from prison early after serving 16 months of a 27-month sentence for fraud.
Olmert became the first former Israeli head of government to be jailed when he was convicted of bribery and obstruction of justice.
After serving as Prime Minister for three years, he resigned in 2009 when charges were brought against him.
Olmert, 71, was convicted in 2014 on a series of bribery charges over a real estate project eight years previously. He was sentenced a year later on additional bribery charges relating to his period in office as Jerusalem mayor, between 1993 and 2003.
On June 20 the former Prime Minister was taken to Tel Aviv’s Tel Hashomer Hospital after complaining of chest complaints.
Olmert’s lawyer stated that under the terms of his parole, he will volunteer at two Israeli charities, despite being technically exempt due to his age.
