Both World Jewish Relief and Magen David Adom UK have launched emergency appeals in response to the “humanitarian consequences” of last week’s devastating explosion in Beirut.
WJR wants to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the blast. Chief executive Paul Anticoni said: “Our Jewish values obligate us to reach out and offer our assistance and demonstrate an immense act of kindness. These are people who have lost everything and we as a Jewish community can help in their hour of need.”
The appeal will help with food and cooking items, hygiene essentials and bedding. It will also cover shelter materials, accommodation support or repairs to make homes habitable.
Stacey Swimer, director of international programmes and partnerships, said the charity was continuing “to assess where needs are greatest, prioritising assistance to women, children, the elderly and those living with disability.
“We are simultaneously working to identify a credible and capable agency that can deliver support in Beirut which would pass our exacting accountability standards and is free of any external interference, ensuring that all support we provide gets to those that need it.”

The MDA UK appeal for medicines is being run in collaboration with International Health Partners.
Its goal is to raise £70,000 to facilitate the immediate shipment and delivery of pharmaceuticals through IHP’s in-country partner. Seven containers of medicines and supplies belonging to IPH were destroyed in the blast.
MDA UK chief executive Daniel Burger said: “Magen David Adom has a long and proud history of sending aid in times of emergency to countries that need it. Even when Israel cannot be directly involved, MDA UK is well-placed to help save more lives."
