'Devastated' at the loss of an outdoor Limmud, a group of enthusiasts are staging an alternative
August 16, 2018 15:36Since tents were put away after the last Limmud in the Woods two years ago, there has been a gap in the Jewish market for outdoor summer events.
Now a group of Limmud in the Woods devotees have come up with Nomads in a Field, which will be held near London over the August Bank Holiday.
Madeline Young, one of the festival’s directors, said she had been “devastated” at the loss of the summer Limmud.
“Camping is a reminder of the natural world. There is something special about it and we as a people have been nomadic for thousands of years.”
But for those less enthused about camping, there will also be the option of indoor accommodation.
Following a small launch event last year, the programme has been expanded with the addition of music and performing arts and organisers hope for a turnout of least 100. “We have been inundated with people who want to be involved,” Ms Young said. “And it is not too late to get in touch. We would also really like some sponsors.
“We have so much talent in the community that it makes sense to have a festival that shows it off. We also want to provide a platform for Israeli artists because they don’t always get the welcome they deserve when they visit other countries to perform.”
Activities will range from lessons in Latin and Scottish dance to sessions on kashrut, mikveh, and organic gardening. The festival site incorporates a kosher kitchen, eruv and swimming pool and has disabled access.
“Being an inclusive space is really important to us,” Ms Young added. “We want to welcome people from across the community.
“And the fact we are having the festival on a Jewish-owned site is a bonus because we are putting money back into the community.”
