Members of New North London Synagogue, the country’s largest Masorti community, have given overwhelming endorsement to the appointment of Rabbi Danny Nevins from New York as their next senior rabbi.
They voted 93.5 per cent to approve the synagogue’s council’s recommendation to succeed Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg, who retired at the end of the year.
Rabbi Wittenberg becomes emeritus rabbi of the Finchely community while continuing in his role as senior rabbi of the Masorti movement.
Rabbi Nevins, a former dean of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, is due formally to take up the position in the summer but will start becoming involved in the community before he and his wife Lynn move to London.
He said he was “absolutely thrilled to be joining NNLS as the new senior rabbi and am deeply grateful for the confidence placed in me by the recruitment steering group, council and the community.
"Throughout this process, I have been genuinely moved by the energy, diversity and generosity of spirit that defines NNLS. As the community enters an important new phase in its history, I am keenly aware of the responsibility that comes with this role.” He will be working with the rabbinic team on plans before his arrival.
"I am both privileged and mindful of the trust I have been given and look forward to serving as senior rabbi with commitment, openness, and a deep respect for its values and people and of course the legacy created by Rabbi Jonathan,” he said.
