A Board of Deputies member has been honoured by his native Morocco for his interfaith work.

Sydney Assor, 85, was inducted into the Order of Ouissam Alaouite as Commander. He received the honour from Princess Lalla Joumala, the Moroccan Ambassador to the UK, in a central London ceremony.

"I'm very proud because it's the equivalent of the CBE," Mr Assor said. "I must be the only Jewish fellow who has it at the moment. There's certainly not anybody in England who has it, either Jewish or Muslim."

He explained that, for the past 30 years, he had worked on initiatives to bring Jews and Muslims together.

Former members of the Order include President Eisenhower and General George Patton. In the opening scene of the Academy-Award winning Patton, the title character is seen receiving the Grand Cross of the Order.
