Over 300 British Jews died from Covid-related illness in 2021, according to Board of Deputies figures.

From January 3 to December 31, the Board recorded 310 Jewish burials where the deceased had contracted the virus. The total for 2020 was 654, more than 300 of which were reported in the first month the Board compiled figures (March 23-April 23).

Board president Marie van der Zyl said the 964 deaths were each “a heavy loss for their families and our thoughts are with them.

“It is clear from these figures that the Jewish community is taking the challenge of Covid seriously, with far fewer Covid-related deaths this year [2021] than last.

“I urge everyone eligible to take a vaccine to do so, so that we can protect our loved ones and continue to rebuild our communal way of life.”

The Board recorded seven Covid-related funerals in the last two weeks of 2021.
