Edgware and Hendon Reform members celebrated the Jewish New Year for Animals with a “bark mitzvah” in the shul courtyard.
Sixteen dogs and their owner families took part and the service included prayers giving thanks for beauty of animals and appreciation for their companionship during tough times.
Rabbi Mark Goldsmith said that during the pandemic, pets had been a “lifeline for many of our members.
“The dogs behaved impeccably during the service and afterwards it was wonderful to see how members who barely knew each other connected through their pets. We plan an online ‘cat mitzvah’ later this year.”
Congregant Sharon Price welcomed the initiative, saying: “Our grandchildren Sammy and Emily enjoyed the service and meeting all the other dogs and I had trouble dragging them away. The dogs immediately created a relaxed atmosphere and bonding experience.”
