He's got the world on his plinth

A former JFS geography teacher put his expertise to use to raise £1,200 for children’s charity Camp Simcha when taking his place on Antony Gormley’s Fourth Plinth last Friday.

Richard Beach, 40, from Radlett, drew a map of the world from memory and offered passers-by in Trafalgar Square the opportunity to have their name on a sponsored location.

“Most people picked special places to them in the UK and Israel, but we did have a few strange ones,” he
said. “Someone chose the Cook Islands, because they thought I wouldn’t be able to memorise where they were. Another picked a town called Vulcan in Canada because they are a Star Trek fan.”

Mr Beach, director of children’s services at Radlett Synagogue, let his children pick a location. Twins Shoshana and Joshua were inspired by their favourite films Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda (Beijing). Sam, three, picked Russia, “because it is the biggest”.
