Hasmonean High School hopes its redevelopment will be back on track after drawing up a revised planning application to go before Barnet Council.
Although Barnet’s planning committee narrowly approved the scheme last year, it was blocked by the Mayor of London’s office because of concerns over the use of green belt land. The main part of the plan is to relocate the boys’ division from its overcrowded and run-down premises in Hendon to next door to the girls’ school in Mill Hill.
The amended proposal broadly follows “the design of the previous application but will be housed on the existing girls’ school site”, parents were told by the Jewish Secondary Schools Movement, the school’s religious authority.
It followed “a lengthy and positive process of workshops with the Mayor’s office”.
Playing areas would be incorporated in the fields around the building.
Hasmonean is also proceeding with plans to formally split the boys and girls divisions into two schools, which will be run jointly under the umbrella of a multi-academy trust.
It has been forced down this route after a Court of Appeal ruling last year against a state-aided Muslim school that it was illegal to separate boys and girls entirely.
