Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and Bishop John Keenan of the Diocese of Paisley attended a ceremony on Wednesday marking the official opening of the shared £17 million site of Glasgow’s Calderwood Lodge Jewish Primary and St Clare’s Catholic Primary.
Calderwood Lodge has relocated to the faith schools’ campus — thought to be the first of its kind —- whose Newton Mearns location places it in the heart of the Jewish community. The project was delivered under the aegis of East Renfrewshire Council and the schools have been operating since August.

The council’s convener of education and equalities, Paul O’Kane, said afterwards: “It is fantastic that these two schools share their own strong and distinct faiths. But this is coupled with shared values which embrace diversity and reflect the multi-cultural world in which we live.”
Writing in the Telegraph, Rabbi Mirvis said he was “particularly proud” to be at the ceremony.
“Those Jewish and Catholic children will grow up proud of who they are and the beauty of their faith, together with deep respect for each other. I cannot imagine a more perfect example of what I believe the future can hold for faith communities in this country.”
