Glasgow's very own guitar man stepped into the breach on Independence Day when the scheduled Israeli entertainers were stranded by the flight chaos.

Newton Mearns minister Rabbi Danny Bergson entertained the 300 guests at a party in Giffnock, with the musical assistance of Josh Cowan.

Face painting and cupcake decoration were among a variety of activities for children and families.

"Rabbi Bergson stepped in at very short notice and was really very good," said Kenny Davidson, chair of Glasgow Zionist Federation, which organised the party in conjunction with JNF KKL Scotland, Maccabi and UJIA. "It was a lively event with a lot of young families."

Annabel Lawson went away particularly happy, having won first prize in the raffle - two El Al flights and accommodation.

There was a family friendly feel to the Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation celebration on Tuesday, at which children made a "Wishing Wall" of messages for Israel. They were joined by the adults for a buffet and Israeli dancing led by American student Leah Hurwich. Children were also prominent at the small Aberdeen community's party, which featured flag making and Israeli dancing.
