The Board of Deputies has made David Mendoza-Wolfson its senior vice-president following yesterday's resignation of Gary Mond.
Mr Mond, the treasurer of the JNF, announced his departure yesterday, claiming his views had been "cancelled" by the Board's leadership after they launched an investigation into comments he had made about Islam on social media.
Mr Mendoza-Wolfson, who at 29 was the Board's youngest vice-president when he was elected last May, chairs its international division.
A trustee of Edgware and Hendon Reform Synagogue and of the London Jewish Forum, he works as a political assistant to the Conservative Group at Barnet Council and has previously worked with NGO Watch in Switzerland.
Traditionally, the post of senior vice-president goes to the candidate with the highest number of votes in the triennial elections. Mr Mendoza-Wolfson polled in second place.
The Board has said an election to replace Mr Mond will be held soon.
