Shadow Attorney-General Emily Thornberry was among the 300 crowd at Chabad Islington’s big summer fete, back for the first time since the pandemic.

A National Lottery-supported celebration of Jewish culture, the event featured activities and entertainment for all ages, including klezmer music, games, arts and crafts, face painting and a Jewish Museum stall. Visitors also enjoyed complimentary chocolate rugelach.

Ms Thornberry, the MP for Islington South, said: “It is truly wonderful to see the community all here on Highbury Fields. And it is great to hear about the developments in the Angel with a Jewish community space and the history project with the Mayor of London.”

Chabad Islington’s Rabbi Mendy Korer said it had been great to reconnect with the local community “after a couple years of lockdown.

“Watching people from all walks of life make new friendships and refresh old relationships was truly heart-warming.

“Hosting the fete in a large park means that we are joined by Jewish and non-Jewish residents of Islington alike. This has a positive impact on breaking down barriers. Through tasting warm chocolate rugelach or having a go at the ‘Jewish Escape Room’, people of all backgrounds learn about Jewish heritage and culture in a fun and participatory way.”

The Mayor of Islington, Councillor Marian Spall, was also among the guests.
