A heritage group has raised concerns over a project to install high-power electricity cables on the Channel Island of Alderney, fearing it could disturb Holocaust graves. JTrails director Marcus Roberts said that six Nazi slave labour camps - containing inmates who were a mix of European and Russian nationalities and included Jews - operated on Alderney from 1942.
Local preservation group Sites of Memory last month alerted Mr Roberts to drilling and digging taking place under the anti-tank wall and on Longis Common, an area containing the site of a former camp cemetery, which had a separate Jewish section. "I and others were immediately concerned that disturbance of human remains could occur and contacted the local authorities to ask them to stop digging," Mr Roberts said.
States of Alderney chief executive Victor Brownlees agreed "that there is a need for proper archaeological supervision to protect what may be there." That supervision would be in place for future work.
