A Glasgow Reform leader who saved a woman from drowning in freezing water has been presented with a Brave@Heart award by Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond at Edinburgh Castle.

Shul membership officer Steven Anson was walking with his wife Hilary at the Balgray Reservoir in Glasgow on Boxing Day 2009 when he saw the woman, who had fallen through the ice while walking her dogs and was up to her neck in freezing water. He laid down on the ice and used his belt to drag the woman 30 feet to the river bank.

Strathclyde Police nominated Mr Anson for the Brave@Heart award.

"It was quite an honour to be there at Edinburgh Castle alongside people from the rescue services," Mr Anson said. "But ultimately we're just pleased the rescue was successful. At the time I was completely calm. I'd been much more nervous four weeks earlier when my daughter got married."
