Inspired by the Black Lives Matter campaign, Liberal Judaism has launched an action group to promote inclusivity for black Jews and Jews of colour within the movement.
It is inviting black Jewish LJ members — and black non-Jewish members of Jewish families — to be involved. The aim is to make practical and sustainable recommendations towards making its synagogues and other spaces welcoming for all.
The group is being put together by Kehillah North London member Omar Portillo and an initial online meeting will be held in early August.
“The Jewish community is a rich multi-ethnic international community,” Mr Portillo said. “Our Jewish scriptures teach us that we came out of Egypt in our mixed multitudes and as a diverse nation. All Jews stood together at Sinai in all of our diversity.
Yet despite our diverse histories, this is sadly not reflected within our national Jewish organisations and denominations. Liberal Judaism has long been at the cutting edge of British Judaism. However, we are falling short with our members who are black Jews or Jews of colour and this group is a key step in changing that.”
The movement wants black Jews properly represented in its activities and material — and to have a forum should they experience problems.
Interim national director Rabbi Charley Baginsky said: “It is not good enough for us to talk about inclusivity. To be confident that we are doing enough, we need to ensure that we raise the profile and amplify the voices of those within our community who are black Jews and Jews of colour.
“Liberal Judaism has always prided itself on being inclusive. When we fall short of this ethic, it is incumbent on us to do better.”
The initiative will also be a key element of the movement’s youth curriculum.
