Bar and batmitzvahs can continue in shul under latest Covid rules in England

Attendance at lifecycle events other than weddings and funerals have been cut to six - but there are exemptions if they form part of religious service in place of worship

Bar- and batmitzvahs can continue in synagogue despite new social distancing rules that came into effect in England on Monday which reduced attendance to life-cycle events to six.

The number of people allowed at a wedding ceremony or reception has been cut from 30 to 15, although 30 people can still attend a funeral.

But it will not be possible to say Kaddish at an Orthodox stone-setting as only six people can now attend.

Life-cycle events which are part of a service in a place of worship can go on – there is no limit on numbers providing social distancing guidance is adhered to.

But though bneimitzvah ceremonies can continue in shul, it will not now be possible to host a celebration for up to 30 people afterwards. Nor will it be possible have a ceremony at a private venue with more than six people present.
