David Baddiel discussed his life and career before an audience of 200 Jewish Care supporters in Golders Green.

Interviewed by Kate Fulton, the writer and comedian spoke about his North-West London upbringing, Fantasy Football and Three Lions and his show, My Family: Not The Sitcom.

About the latter, he said: “I never think it’s good to sweep things under the carpet and I find it’s more difficult not to talk about things.

“So when my dad got the diagnosis of Pick’s disease and I was told he had dementia, I found the best way to process it was to talk about, and in my case, to make comedy out of it.

“I think being Jewish is all about family, tradition and comedy.”

He also explained why he engaged with trolls — describing them as the hecklers of the internet — and praised Jewish Care’s “fantastic work with people who need support in the community”.

Baddiel was invited to speak at the charity’s Michael Sobell Community Centre by his cousin Michael Radbil, who chairs its voluntary advisory committee.

Making the appeal, Mr Radbil referred to the launch of the government’s loneliness strategy.

“It may not surprise those of you who know this centre that government advisers visited here a few months ago to see first-hand the impact of our work and understand more about how best to alleviate social isolation and loneliness.”

The evening raised £6,000 for the centre.
