The Covid-19 crisis has seen a dramatic drop in purchases of agricultural produce – but with Leket Israel’s help, the generous donations of farmers will be feeding others.
Leket Israel, the food-redistribution charity, has seen an increase of 1,000 tons in donations of agricultural produce due to the Covid-19 crisis. It plans to use the surplus to provide for additional municipalities and community centres in time for Passover.
On an ongoing basis, Leket Israel supports its 200 non-profit partners with surplus fresh fruit and vegetables and excess hot meals. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the charity is seeing an increase of 1,000 tons in donations of agricultural produce. This comes as a result of the drastic decline in the purchase of agricultural goods by restaurants, hotels, catering companies and more. The outbreak has also affected Leket’s hot meals rescue programme, with a reduction of 98 per cent in food donations. In response, Leket has been purchasing prepared meals for distribution to 10,000-plus housebound elderly and vulnerable during the crisis and in time for Passover.
Responding to requests from all over the country, Leket is supplying not only its partner agencies but also municipalities and community centres throughout Israel.
Tal, a farmer from the Ben Shalom farm in Rishon Lezion, recently donated 12 tons of cabbage to Leket Israel. He grew this harvest to be sold in the marketplace. Tal says: “The corona crisis has affected every step of the entire food chain. The company that normally purchases my produce closed overnight, since it had nowhere to sell to. I have no way to market my cabbage in such a short timeframe. Donating these cabbages is not an economic solution for me, however it gives me great comfort knowing that people in need, without access to fresh vegetables, can enjoy my goods. I am truly grateful that it will not all end us as waste.”
Gidi Kroch, Leket Israel CEO, says: “We thank the farmers, like Tal, who during this difficult time, when they are unable to sell their produce, are showing great humanity by donating it to ensure that it is being given to the people who need it most. We at Leket Israel could not continue to provide for Israelis in need without the incredible support of the Israeli farming community, especially with the Passover holiday soon approaching.”
