Eco-friendly JCoSS pilots environmental project

Sensors will allow school to monitor energy usage and carbon dioxide levels

articlemain

JCoSS is to take part in a new project designed to make it more eco-friendly.

Sensors will be installed at the cross-communal school’s East Barnet site which will enable it to measure carbon dioxide levels and energy usage.

The school will be able to “monitor its electricity consumption and emissions, enabling reductions to be made where such usage is not needed”, a spokesman explained.

“This could lead to a whole host of potential changes, from things as big as installing solar panels on the roof, all the way down to turning the lights and fridges off when they’re not being used after the school day has ended.”

The information will also be used in lessons in a joint project between the Jewish studies and geography departments.

The school will be piloting the scheme, which is run by Hopes Sustainability, a social enterprise promoting environmental awareness in education.
