You may have noticed a birth announcement in last week's JC for Eden Layla Keidstein.
Her parents, Charles Keidan and Rebecca Steinfeld are pursuing a legal case for the right to unite in a commitment ceremony - which is currently restricted to same-sex couples - rather than have a traditional marriage.
Their egalitarianism is reflected in the names they have given to their daughter, as they explained in a Facebook post. Eden is a gender-neutral name "to help her express her identity without having to carry cultural assumptions before she is even conscious of them". Layla, a word common to both Hebrew and Arabic (which means "night"), alludes to their concern for Israel and Palestine.
Eden's surname is a blend from both parents' names - possibly a first in the JC social and personal columns. "We considered hyphenating our current surnames," Mr Keidan explained, "but decided that it was too much of a mouthful."
