Wimbledon Reform Synagogue
November 11, 2008 15:48Wimbledon Reform Synagogue are calling for volunteers for their Mitzvah Day activities. Various activities will be taking place around South London and they need your help!
Here are the activities that you could come and take part in...
1. St. George's Hospital, Tooting - 3-5pm
Volunteers are needed for St. George's elderly care wards to do some storytelling, read some poetry or just provide company for the patients. There are 30 patients well enough to receive visitors but who sadly have no visitors of their own. Only thing is you must have proof that you are CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checked.
2. Drake House Concert - 12.30-3pm
Just a couple more people are needed to help prepare sandwiches and tea at the concert being put on by the New Apostolic Church Band at Drake House (St. George's Road, Wimbledon) in response to the Synagogue's offer of help to the Wimbledon Guild on Mitzvah Day.
3. Cook-in - 10.30 onwards at pre-arranged times
If you like cooking soups or veggie meals, help stock up the freezer for the synagogue Care Group to distribute at times of need, and produce food to take to the Merton Homeless Drop-in Centre. The Synagogue will provide the recipes and the equipment. All they ask is that you bring the ingredients for one batch that you're going to cook (or more if you're feeling energetic). Space is limited to 5 people in the kitchen at one time, so they need to know numbers in order to schedule the time slots.
4. Nursing Home visits - a.m. and p.m. possible
Residents at Rosemary Lodge and Heathlands Court will be delighted to receive as many visitors as can be provided from the shul on Mitzvah Day to chat, play cards, maybe entertain a little. Exact time to be confirmed.
5. Knitting Circle - any time between 10.30 and 12.30
Whether you already know how to knit, or want to learn, please join us to make beautiful cotton wash cloths to go into toilet bags for the Separated Child Foundation. They will provide the needles, colourful yarn, easy patterns and plenty of instruction from an expert. Numbers are needed to be known as soon as possible so we can make sure we have enough pairs of needles and sufficient yarn for everyone to knit a square!
6. Roehampton Community Garden - between 11 and 2
Calling all Barnes, East Sheen and Richmond gardeners. Please join a few of the children from the Cheder as they help beautify the Roehampton Community Garden. All you need to bring is yourself, warmly dressed - equipment and hot drinks are provided.
