A group of Masorti students is to go to Calais over Succot next month to erect shelters for refugees camped there.
They will be taking food and supplies to some of the thousands of migrants from the Middle East and Africa living rough in the French port in the hope of finding a home in Britain.
Gabriel Gendler, 20, who is a member of New North London Synagogue, said around 20 students from the Masorti young adults' group Marom would be making the trip.
He said: "We are going to be building shelters, which are lacking. And we'll be raising money and collecting warm clothes, food and other necessities like nappies to take over."
Succot, he said, was "a time when we are meant to empathise with refugees, who are fleeing oppression.
"We are apolitical in that we aren't taking a position on what our government should do. But as Jews in the modern world, when we see a humanitarian crisis on our doorstep, we feel we should help out."
The group will not be staying inside the refugee camp and will bring a succah with them. "But the shelters we are building will be more practical than a succah as they have to be more sturdy and long-lasting," Mr Gendler said.
