A senior Hamas official has threatened to assassinate two of Israel's leaders — Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defence Minister Ehud Barak — in response to the ongoing IDF attacks.

Fatah Hamad also made threats against leaders of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and "those in the Arab world who have conspired against us", construed by Israeli commentators as a reference to Egypt.

On Sunday, the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, said that Hamas could have prevented Israel's assault had it only agreed to extend the cease-fire, and he urged it to do so now.

By today, however, the senior Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, was insisting that a complete cessation of the Israeli attack was immediately necessary before Palestinian rocket fire into Israel could stop. Egypt, he said, had to do everything in its power to exert pressure on Hamas.
