Lions' masters side progressed to the final of the prestigious Herts County Cup thanks to an extra-time victory over a tough Whitewebbs (Sat) Vets side who more than played their part in tight semi-final tie at Rowley Lane on Sunday.
Despite the deluges of the previous week, the pitch was immaculate which should have set things up for an excellent game. But a stiff breeze and bright sun combined to make conditions a little tougher than either team would have liked.
Lions were on the front foot from the off, and with the wind in their favour dominated the early exchanges. A solid defensive base allowed the likes of Paul Linger, Hadley Silver, Brad Lazarus and Paul Lenchner to focus on getting Lions a lead they deserved.
The first clear chance though came route one, as a huge clearance from Jacobs was latched onto by Lenchner, but his attempted lob over the on-rushing giant of a keeper just failed to get the height it required.
Neat inter-play saw Lenchner in the clear again soon after, but this time he declined the lob only to see his cross-cum shot fly inches wide.
Lions created several other openings as both Silver and Lazarus whipped in dangerous balls to which the finishing touch just needed to be applied, but in truth the closest they came to a break in the deadlock was via a wicked free-kick for the visitors on the edge of the area that brought the best out of Jacobs in the Lions goal.
The second half saw Lions continue from where they had left off, but now with the wind at their backs it became easier for the visitors to get out. Andy Myers, Paul Buxton, Danny Piler, Craig Henry and Jon Rayner, ably screened by Matty Kleinman and Danny Reuben, ensured though that they were generally kept at arm's-length and it remained Lions who asked the majority of the questions. Rayner was at his swashbuckling best at full-back, continually adding support going forward, while Kleinman's energy and Reuben's precision kept Lions on the front foot.
Kaye missed a couple of presentable chances while Max Radford saw a strike from 12 yards expertly palmed over by the keeper. Silver blazed over when well placed before Linger caught the bug and first headed wide before he too amazingly shot over when in the clear.
With Lions' patience being tested, Andy Myers strode forward with the ball, but when possession was conceded a simple ball forward saw Lions out of position and outnumbered. But take nothing away from their very lively striker who controlled the ball on the run and drilled a fine finish in off the far post to give Whitewebbs the lead totally against the run of play.
Lions then escaped what would have been a fatal second when a Toure style mis-placed pass gifted a strike on goal that a flying Jacobs was delighted to see clip the top of his bar.
Lions poured forward, and, with 10 minutes to go finally got the equaliser when Linger broke into the box and headed past the keeper. Lenchner had a chance to win it, but his fierce shot was well held, while in the dying minutes another free-kick at the other end almost saw Whitewebbs steal it only for Jacobs to once again be equal to the task with a flying save.
And so to extra-time. Still Lions asked most of the questions, but their visitors remained a threat on the break, the closest though either team came to a goal saw Silver sliding in at the far post but unable to keep his shot down.
The final period saw Lions attack once more and win a corner. Lazarus delivered, Buxton dummied and there was Lenchner to stab home from six yards what proved to be the winner as Lions saw the game out with few alarms and secured their first ever final place where they'll meet Bushey Sports Club at Letchworth on March 2.
