Maccabi Tel Aviv midfielder Eran Zahavi broke a famous goalscoring record when he netted for the 17th consecutive match in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Maccabi Petah Tikva in Israel’s Ligat Ha’Al.
Zahavi’s 28th-minute header saw him surpass Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga record of scoring in 16 consecutive matches and move closer to Lionel Messi’s 21-match scoring streak in La Liga for Barcelona.
Zahavi has now scored 16 goals in 14 matches this season and is well on course to beat the all-time Israeli top league goal-scoring record of 30 in a season by Beitar Jerusalem’s Nissim Elmaliah in 1956.
Zahavi said: "I'm so happy to just keep scoring. I go out to every match to do my job and my teammates help me score and to be honest I score so much because they make it so easy for me."
But with interest mounting from Europe’s top leagues, and the January transfer window about to open, the 27 year-old may not get the chance to break all these records.
In England, Spurs’ chief scout Paul Mitchell is reportedly tracking Zahavi who has also been linked with
Swansea, WBA, and Burnley.
Zahavi, who signed an improved contract in the summer said: "Maccabi do not have to persuade me to stay as I have a five-year contract."
Maccabi spokesman Ofer Ronen declined to comment.
