Yossi Benayoun was the toast of Liverpool after his injury time winner put the Merseysiders top of the Premier League on Saturday night.

Having spurned two easier opportunities, the Israeli captain ended a disappointing week on a high after firing into the top corner to put the Reds ahead of Manchester United, who went on to finish the weekend top of the Premier League after beating Aston Villa 3-2.

Benayoun has made a habit of scoring vital goals with his Craven Cottage strike coming on the back of one at the Bernabeu in the Champions League.

“We were starting to think it was going to be one of those days when the ball just wouldn’t go in,” Beayoun said. “I think we’ve proved in a lot of games this season that we will fight and give our best to the end,” said Benayoun. “It just shows how strong our character is that we’ve won a lot of games this season in the last minutes.”
