Daryl Kay admits Woodford Wanderers only have themselves to blame after they failed to pull clear at the top following a four-goal thriller against North London Raiders B.
The east Londoners stormed into a 2-0 interval lead through Harrison Midda and Elliott Gold. Playing some nice football against a team "that clearly wanted to press us high up the pitch," Midda unleashed an absolute beauty from 25 yards into the top corner on 25 minutes to put them ahead.
Moments later and Gold turned his marker inside out before smashing home from close range to double the lead.
Midda could then have put the game to bed after running on to a Mitch Hahn through ball, rounding the keeper before seeing his shot bounce back off the post.
Raiders, to their credit, fought back well in the second half. Josh Green started the comeback with an impudent chip before Lewis Blitz finished off an excellent team move to make it 2-2.
But it was Woodford though who were left scratching their heads as to how they failed to secure maximum points after hitting the woodwork no less than three times, and Hahn had a great chance to nick it late on but he was denied by a great one-on-one save by NLR keeper David Simnock.
Woodford joint-boss Daryl Kay told JC Sport; "I'm not sure how many more times I'll be saying this, but once again it was a great first half, and yep, you guessed it, awful second half.
"We went into half-time having dominated the game and our plan was to start the second half as we ended the first, but things didn’t go to plan. We started to play football in the wrong areas and with 30 minutes to go it was 2-1.
"We responded well, having two headers cleared off the line, hitting the bar and post in the same attack and having a perfectly good goal disallowed by their linesman for no reason. David Woolf himself even admitted to me that he couldn’t see why the goal was chalked off – it was a decision that baffled all of us, even the ref.
"Against the run of play with 10 minutes left it was 2-2 after some sloppy defending, and that’s how the game ended.
"Putting a positive spin on things - Considering we were without five key players and regular starters – James Ryan, Tom Alexander, Paul Biller, Darryl Green and Adam Poole, a draw doesn’t seem such a bad result, especially as we’re still unbeaten in the league since the second game of the season.
"Jerome and I will be putting our thinking caps on to see how we can turn a good 45 minutes into a good 90 minutes."
