There were mixed fortunes for Israel's two leading tennis stars in the first round of the US Open.

Shahar Peer, who has slipped to 64 in the WTA rankings, recovered her best form to beat 32nd seed Agnes Szavay.

Peer, who last year crashed out in the first round at Flushing Meadow, swept past the young Hungarian 6-2, 6-2.

Peer was scheduled to play Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro (35) in the second round.
