Sunday marks the start of season 2016/17 of the MGBSFL, with 13 matches scheduled across three divisions and the big one between Raiders and Redbridge certainly has everyone talking, with Jon Jacobs admitting he's had to enter the "emergency loan market" as he has four key players missing. Danny Caro looks ahead to all the matches and predicts which teams will make a winning start.
MGBSFL PREMIER DIVISION
NORTH LONDON RAIDERS A vs REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE A
The Dan Shafron regime gets under way at North London – but the defending champions couldn’t have asked for a tougher start than Redbridge.
I’ve struggled to get the name of Shafron’s summer acquisitions but he told me he’s bolstered in key areas and is confident of leading L’Orange to their third consecutive title.
Jordan Marks was their star man last year and if Matt Stock can stay fit, I can see them going very close again.
Shafron told JC Sport: “It’s been a long pre-season so we are all excited for the new campaign to get started.
Personally I am excited for the challenge and excited to prove myself here.
“I know the responsibility and expectations and we know that people will have big expectations of us so we must be focused and motivated if we want to be champions again.
“The boys are a great group, they are winners and naturally have that appetite. I don’t have to drive that in to them.
“What we’ve had to do is identify certain areas where we can get even better. We may be champions but there is always room for improvement and the pressure is exciting. What we want to do is simple. Get the ball quickly and create as many chances as possible.
“Our game on Sunday against Redbridge is going to be a super test and I’m looking forward to it.
“We know what they are all about and the threats they possess and they will be one of several teams believing they can win the league this season.
“To play each other on the opening weekend already has all the makings of a blockbuster but we are well prepared and it will be up to us to produce a better performance than them on the day.”
Jon Jacobs has been busy splashing the cash to strengthen his squad, and RJC fans will be delighted to hear that Dean Nyman has committed for the season. They are much more potent in attack with him in the team. And his partnership with Daniel Garfinkle promises goals.
Zack Neiman is another strong addition to an already talented pool of players. He can play at the back or up top and adjusting to top-flight football won’t be an issue.
I know some RJC supporters who would take a point from the champions first up, but Jacobs is hungry for a win that would be a real statement of intent.
He told JC Sport: “I am extremely motivated to make this a successful start but am extremely unhappy that we are playing this fixture in week one.
“We have four first team players out in and wanted the game rescheduled as it was week one of the season but the League were unable to help us on this occasion.
“I have been in to the ‘Emergency Loan market’ and am hoping to spring a few gems to help us give it a real go.
“We respect how good Raiders are but I am only interested in my players and believe that whatever team I put out, we have enough to really test the reigning champions mettle.
Towards the end of our pre-match conference, Jacobs cranked up the mind game. Asked about players to watch, he said this. “Daniel Garfinkle has added tracking back and making goals to his armoury and also seems to have got even faster.”
Jacobs confirmed “England Futsal star Russell Goldstein will make his Maccabi debut and will be aiming to impress.
“Zack Neiman has looked solid in defence and good up front. Where will he play on Sunday , this will be decided just before kick-off
“Sam Sollosi - one of the best players in Jewish football - is ready to kick on and dazzle and torment the opposition defenders again.
“Player X – One of the best players in Jewish Football, ready to dominate the midfield if he passes late fitness test
“Player Y- Ditto Player X but a forward
“Player Z- As above but his availability is linked to his nocturnal activities.”
“I am looking forward to seeing Dan Shafron in the cauldron of the Premier League and am delighted that Andy Myerson is the referee for what will be a fiercely contested match.”
Week one matches between MGBSFL are typically hard to predict. RJC must make sure they keep things tight for the first 20 or so and give themselves solid foundations to build on. They have the pace and power to get a result, but the NLR players will be keen to put on a good show in Shafron’s first game and I can see it finishing honours even.
JC team news: RJC are missing Dan Lee , Ben Sollosi, Daryl Rubin and Dean Nyman.

FC TEAM A vs HENDON UNITED SPORTS CLUB A
Hendon will be looking to make their title intentions clear against a new-look FC Team in Harefield.
Having signed a one-year extension at the 11th hour, manager David Garbacz is ready to unleash his summer arrivals on a defence that was playing first division football last year, and conceded quite a few goals.
Home goalkeeper Ed Bloom looks set for a busy debut against a Hendon team expected to field Yoav Lebens, Rocky Spitzer, Josh Harris and Yehuda Korman.
Spitzer is a flair player who I expect to complement captain Ari Last and Lebens who will be playing against his former club.
Garbacz told JC Sport: "“The squad is looking strong with some good new signings. I would never have agreed to come back if I didn’t think we could win the league this year.”
Mitch Young has set the bar high this season, and has spoken of his determination to "win every game". Another play in line to start against his old club is Mike Pearson, who together with Richard Salmon will be looking to stretch the Hendon defence.
Much has been said about the return of Ben Binder in an FC Team side that will be looking to attack and show Hendon who is top dog.
It's hard to call a winner in a contest that will be decided by fine margins.
Venue – Harefield 4G, Ref – Robert Benardout, KO – 10am

MACCABI LONDON LIONS A vs WOODFORD WANDERERS
There’s no better place to start the season than at Rowley Lane.
Division One champions Woodford Wanderers are relishing their visit to the big stage, although joint-manager Daryl Kay insists any title celebrations are at the back of their minds as they prepare for the challenge of the Lions.
The Woodford boys were the model of consistency last season, proving very hard to beat. But there will be times when they have their backs to the wall against the Lions, when fitness levels will be put to the test.
Kay told JC Sport: “We are under no illusions that this is Woodford’s toughest season yet, as we return to the Premier with something to prove after a pretty poor effort last time under the previous Management team.
“Lions will be a real test for us but we’re a team that hasn’t lost a league game in almost a year, so even though we’re all a bit heavier this time round we’ll be going in with the same attitude and mentally that won us the title last season.
“We have almost a full squad to pick from for Sunday and have a sexy new kit and sponsor this season, and providing it fits everyone we should look pretty good at the very least.”
Putting things right with the Sunday A-team is one of the priorities for Lions this season. Joe Marsh and Oli Leslie are looking forward to their first game in charge, with the starting line-up expected to feature several former Harmen players.
Silverware is the aim for Lions this season, while it’s all about consolidation for Woodford and I think that could be evident come the final whistle.
JC team news: Star defender Adam Shafron misses out after hurting himself during pre-season. Kay expects to have him “back in time for our second game of the season against Brady”.
Venue – Rowley Lane, Ref – Richard Jay, KO – 10am

DC Prediction: Lions 3 Woodford 1

SPEC FC vs OAKWOOD A
Everyone at Oakwood believes this could be the season when they go from nearly men to champions.
Dan Kristall, Ric Blank and Alex Schock have been working tirelessly to ensure they have pooled together the strongest group and I expect them to make a winning start on the road against new boys SPEC.
Although several new faces have come in, the big news is that captain marvel Adam Levine is back and he hopes his injury problems are a thing of the past.
Ahead of kick-off, Kristall told JC Sport: “The waiting is over as we start a new season - a season full of hope. We really do believe that we can go one step further and win silverware.
“We look forward to what will be a tough first test against one of division’s newly-promoted sides.
“We expect SPEC will be looking to impress and we know that we can not take any result for granted this season. It’s one game at a time and it starts on Sunday. Bring it on!”
SPEC have lost three key players in Josh Hershman, Alex Hershman and Zack Neiman. Player-manager Ricky Lawrence is realistic enough to know that avoiding promotion is the target, but it’s a big ask.
Lawrence told JCS Sport: “Sunday will be tough. Unfortunately, so will the Sunday after and the Sunday after that and the one after that too. We're excited for the challenge ahead though.
“We're still hoping to dip into the transfer market too. If there is anyone out there, reading this match preview and fancies donning the SPEC shirt, please get in touch!"
Quite frankly SPEC couldn’t have asked for a tougher test. Oakwood are on a mission and will have too much on the day.
JC team news: Oakwood goal machine Dave Woolman faces a late fitness test on a foot injury that has kept him sidelined for the last two weeks. Sam Cantor and Alex Lee are available. The new signings Jake Norton, Thomas Prais and Zack Collins are all in contention and fighting for places. Injury to Jonny Blain could result in Elliot Jackson taking his place in goal. Simon Davies will make his only appearance until March as “we wish him well on his travels”. Captain Adam Levine looks set to be involved in League action for his first start since September 2015.

ATHLETIC BILBAUM vs MACCABI LONDON LIONS B
Chase Lodge will be awash with colour on Sunday for the meeting of Athletic Bilbaum and Lions B.
Both teams moved up from Division Two over the summer, with the Lions promoted as runners-up behind Scrabble.
Sam Marchant has put together a talented young group of players who play football the right way.
He told JC Sport: “With the season about to kick-off there is great excitement in the MLL B camp. We had a strong initial season last year, and of course we are hoping to build on that.
“We know it is going to be a tough season with stronger opponents, but we feel that we are a capable side and have the potential of achieving anything.
“The squad had a lovely summer rest before our pre-season training began and we feel ready to really hit the ground running. Of course this means we would like to get a victory on Sunday and I believe we should be bringing three points back to Rowley Lane.
“However, we head into the game with slight caution knowing that Bilbaum became a stronger outfit towards the end of last season, and if they have made three or four quality signings, they will be a tough challenge to start the season.
“We are all raring to get underway and this first game should be an exciting one to begin the league campaign.”
Bilbaum won’t mind starting Sunday as underdogs. A club spokesman told JC Sport: “The squad has been strengthened with a few new key signings, but the core of the squad is ready to continue the 2016 form.”
Jacob Brunner is one of two players ruled out for the Baums. Joint-manager Julius Judah told JC Sport: "It's a tough opening fixture but we are well rested and raring to go!"
Big things are expected from Seb Silverman and Robert Rodney over the course of the season but they won’t have things all their own way against the Lions.
Venue – Chase Lodge, Ref – Daryl Colmans, KO – 10am
JC star man: Nick Landesberg (Lions)
DC Prediction: Bilbaum 1 Lions 2

FINCHLEY CITY vs LOS BLANCOS
Eyebrows were raised when Josh Gaon left Los Blancos over the summer but he didn’t expect to come up against them so early in the season.
Indeed Finchley beat several clubs to Gaon’s signature but I expect him to keep celebrations low key if the unthinkable happens and he registers against his former club.
Goals are on the cards according to Finchley boss Joel Holder. He told JC Sport: “We played Blancos in a pre-season friendly and drew 5-5.
“Blancos recruited well over the summer so it's going to be a tough game with a lot of interesting battles over the pitch.
“The boys have been buzzing all week and want to start the campaign with a win. We hope to start the game on the front foot, dominate possession, keep it tight at the back and leave nothing on the pitch.”
Nick Grosse was one of the most active managers in the MGBSFL over the summer. He drafted in James Joseph, Avi Kestenbaum, Joel Barnett, Joshua Gertner, Josh Cramer, Elliot Moslawy, Josh Hirshowitz, Luke Strauss, Josh Landy, George Collins and Joe Metliss and is aiming for a top-three finish.
Ahead of Sunday, Grosse told JC Sport: “Los Blancos have a strong squad available for the season opener with two full debutants and three returning players forming a complete 16-man squad.
“We form a solid unit that is hard to break down and a dynamic front line combining speed and technique.
“We will be going home very disappointed if we don't secure the three points in an efficient and effective manner.”
I’ve yet to see Finchley play and it’s always hard to predict how the new teams will settle, but I can see them picking up a point in an entertaining contest.
JC team news: Polak, Bensoor and Benari have been ruled out for Finchley, while Yoel Deal is rated 50/50 and faces a late fitness test. Josh Gaon to make his debut against former club.
Venue – Capital City, Ref – Callum Foster, KO – 10am

DC Prediction: Finchley 2 Blancos 2

OAKWOOD B vs NORTH LONDON RAIDERS B
I’ve missed my visits to the state-of-the-art Oakwood training ground over the summer, but it felt as though I hadn’t been away after a lovely reception from Jason Stein and co.
Hats off to the players he’s brought in who will surely have them challenging for a top three finish.
The Oaks start with a tricky test against a Raiders team they know well. Stein has been spending the week watching hours of footage of Jonathan Adelman’s players – many of whom have been playing together for some time.
"Come in DC. Please eat some Leadsom4Leader biscuits. I have got loads of stock,” Stein told JC Sport.
"We've had a great pre-season. Tisha B'Av came and went without any trouble, we won all our friendlies and we welcomed a few new faces. Business was done nice and early with no deadline day fuss and Ian finally picked up his remaining belongings from my office. We had a chat and I told him I thought he should take the vacant Maccabi Tashkent job.
"I suppose I should address the main line of questioning pre-match. Nine months later and people are still asking me about the post-match bust up from the last time we played Raiders and my conduct.
"I've said a few times I went over the top. Emotions can get the better of a man on a Sunday morning. Last-minute winners are there to be celebrated, especially when scored by the much-missed Bobby Abrams.
"But I did go over the top and I've apologised before. So no there will be no issue on Sunday, I'll shake Mr Adelman's hand and I'll be on best behaviour.
"But I do hope that Raiders don't try the same antics as last time when a little bit of play-acting got Dan Ash sent off. They conned Neal a bit there and I'm sure it's something Neal will want to look out for again this week. He is an exceptionally good referee Neal.”
Although Stein has drafted in some top talent, there was one target he missed.
"It's no secret that during the summer I tried multiple times to sign David Esterkin,” he said. “He turned us down and I respect that he has made a firm decision but the fans will make sure he gets a very tasty reception on Sunday. I think Esty will see the packed stadium we have and the vocal supporters and think 'what if?'
"It's always a tricky game against Raiders. They are one of the mega clubs with a lot of money to spend on obscene transfer fees. Huge expectations on a giant horse like that while we are a smaller horse.
"The rumours are that they will have a few top, top, top players in this week. But we'll have a top team of our own made up of a strong, young, core.
"I'm really looking forward to it and I'm sure it'll be a great game and a great advertisement for the MGBSFL First Division."
Raiders fell below the standard Adelman has set them for various reasons but they have a perfect opportunity to put down a marker and silence Stein.
Adelman insists the team are approaching the season with “renewed energy” although it’s important they “gel quickly".
He told JC Sport: "I'm sure Oakwood will feel they can challenge them all the way. As for us, we will aim to be competitive and see where that gets us come the home stretch.
"All of last season's shenanigans with Oakwood are long forgotten - they're a great club, well run and well managed. Jason has put together a very strong group who I'm picking to challenge Scrabble and Redbridge all the way this season.
"He's tried all summer to tap up David Esterkin but Esti is part of the fabric of Raiders and we're delighted he is fit and available for us on Sunday after missing all of last season with injury."
The first 20 minutes are key on Sunday. Oakwood will look to make a fast start and over the course of 90 minutes Stein might just hold the aces.
JC team news: Alex Koslover is expected to make a triumphant return to the Oakwood colours and his second debut for the club will hopefully be a headline maker. The enigmatic 25-year-old central midfielder is an excellent player. Harris Kersh gets the nod in goal and Dan Ash and Dan Seligman will provide width.
NLR arey missing Richard Bloom and Nicky Woolf, both still recovering from Israeli dancing strains picked up at their respective recent weddings. Alex Elf, Mark Leader, Marc Wolfe, Danny Bloom and Scott Waissel are also out this week. Raiders legend Jamie Wolfson is in line for his first appearance in a couple of years and could feature in a fearsome front four of J-men alongside Jacob Gold, Josh Goldstein and Jake Gilbert.
Venue – Nicholas Breakspear, Ref – Neal Cohen, KO – 10am
JC star man: Harris Kersh (Oakwood)
DC Prediction: Oakwood 2 Raiders 1

REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE B vs HENDON UNITED SPORTS CLUB B
Sam Rank cannot wait for the big MGBSFL kick-off. Preparations for the season have been much smoother than 12 months ago and he is ready to unleash his players on to Hendon.
With star striker David Fialka absent, Rank hopes one of his other players will step up as they look to build a really encouraging few months.
Rank told JC Sport: “We have a very big and strong squad to choose from for our opening fixture.
“Pre-season has been brilliant. The commitment, passion and training has been top draw. The boys are itching to get on the pitch for Sunday first league game.
“Hendon B will not be underestimated, however I feel the quality that we have all over the pitch will show the league what we are about this season, and send a strong message to our title rivals.
“With a strong squad to choose from I am expecting fireworks from the starting 11.”
Hendon boss Jono Nesbitt and James Neidle are hopeful of coming away from Essex with maximum points.
Their new front two continue to show signs of great promise and will be looking to stretch the home defence.
Ahead of kick-off, Nesbitt told JC Sport: “We are very confident that we can get some points on the board and get things running from the beginning of season.
“We are expecting a lot of goals from Gale and Ellis who would love to mark their first full debut with a couple goals between them.”
I’m predicting goals on Sunday, with home advantage helping RJC come out on top.
JC team news: Joe Jordan is having a late summer birthday celebration and holiday and will be missed by RJC. David Fialka is still out for a few more months with ligament damage – “we wish him a quick recovery”. Dan Andrews and Brad Gayer will be having late fitness tests from the medical team at Faces night club early Sunday morning.
Hendon are missing Gideon Barth “as he is still galavanting around the world on his summer holidays” and the ever faithful Ezekiel Jacob may miss most of this season due to a recurring foot injury. Otherwise they are full strength.

CATFORD & BROMLEY MACCABI vs FC TEAM B
Jeff Gotch is spoilt for choice in terms of personnel ahead of Catford’s meeting with FC Team B.
We saw what his side were capable of last year and if they can get their act together from the start, there’s no reason why they can’t be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.
“We are looking to start strong and get three points on the board,” Gotch told JC Sport.
“We're missing a few players but still have 19 to choose from.
I'm really excited for this season and trust me we're all ready to go and take the league by storm.”
It’s hard to know exactly what to expect of FC Team B this season so I’m banking on a home win on Sunday.

HERTSWOOD VALE vs FAITHFOLD B
Hertswood Vale are relishing a meeting with an MGBSFL giant in the shape of Faithfold in their first competitive outing.
Joint-manager Jack Shulman is confident of taking a major scalp in a game where a bumper crowd are expected to cheer on their heroes.
“We are going for a strong start for the season,” Shulman told JC Sport, “and we will be working hard in every game to ensure a strong result.
“The aim of the side is to be on the back page of the JC every week.
“It’s looking like a reasonable strength squad this week, watch out for Elio Elia and Harry Graham.
“We are here to win and we will be starting that this weekend.”
Faithfold’s preparations have been low key. Club stalwart David Garson looks refreshed after a summer break in Florida, while one or two of the usual suspects, possibly including Richard 'Schnitzelman' Fogelman, will do their best to ensure Hertswood don’t have things all their own way.
Garson told JC Sport: "We'll be fielding a mix of old and young. Raph Meyers, Avi Garson as well as Josh Barnett to name a few. We could be the Leicester City of division Two!"
Venue – Tempsford Green, Ref – Luke Steele, KO – 10am

MILL HILLS DONS vs TEMPLE FORTUNE
Brandon Hamme has major selection headaches ahead of Sunday’s Maccabi League debut against Fortune, with no less than nine 1st teamers missing.
Fortune will be relieved to hear goal machine Jono Gaon is one of them as they bid to get their new regime off to a positive start.
Hamme told JC Sport: “I remain confident ahead of the fixture despite a big section of our squad missing. We have many of our key players available including both our captain Nick Phillips and vice-captain Ryan Kramer.
“This is our first game together as MH Dons but the core of the Tottenham Chutzpah team of the 2012/13 season still remains and I think this could help us develop into a strong team quickly.
“Temple Fortune are a decent side and we will head into the game knowing that we will have to work hard to get the three points.
“I feel like three points is most definitely achievable and we will doing our outmost to start the season off in wining ways.”
Fortune have drafted in a handful of players who were playing Premier Division football last season which should stand them in good stead.
But manager Simon Linden is taking nothing for granted despite an positive pre-season.
He told JC Sport: “It's never easy going into a first game of the season against a new team, especially given the success stories of both London rovers and Scrabble in previous years.
“For us, it's been an encouraging pre season - I have a good group here and the attitude has been first class.
“I'm looking forward to getting the season started.”
I can see both sides scoring in what is expected to be an open and entertaining affair. There promises to be great battles all over the park and it could all boil down to which teams takes their chances.
JC team news: Jono Gaon, Adam Isaacs and Lewis Silver are sidelined through injury for the Dons. They also have six other players that are away on holiday, so will be unavailable for selection.
Fortune are without summer arrivals Adam Speck and Gab Stone, plus Lee Fegan but otherwise close to full strength.
Venue – Mill Hill Park, Ref – Paul Dobkin, KO – 10am
JC star man: Darren Zitren (Fortune)
DC Prediction: MH Dons 2 Fortune 3

NORTH LONDON RAIDERS C vs L’EQUIPE
David Domb labelled this as a “clash against our great rivals” ahead of NLR’s opener against
The sides have played out some enthralling battles in recent years and Domb predicts another corker.
“Could there be a more fitting opponent to start the season?” he told JC Sport.
Domb went on to say: “It's the fifth season in a row us and L'Equipe will lock horns, I'm sure Nick and Mark remember an epic battle or two down the years...
“It's been a funny pre-season with all the changes at the club, but that's not to say all us Raiders teams won't be strong and aren't ready to go. Again there's talent across the board, and it's an exciting time to be involved.
“As always Division Two will be competitive, and there'll be plenty of teams who feel they can be in the top two in May. That's a long way off now, let's just get the first points on the board.”
Excitement is brewing in the L Equipe camp for what is a very special season for Nick Stern’s boys.
Strong reinforcements have come in over the summer and there’s no reason why they cannot give promotion a good go.
Stern told JC Sport: “Our 10th year brings more than ever a sense of hope that we can add some silverware to our sadly bare trophy cabinet.
“We have built a squad that is capable of challenging with all the big boys in the league and hope we can do ourselves proud.
“Sadly I wish we didn’t have to play Raiders first game of the season. Raiders have always been a bit of a bogey side for us and with a slightly disruptive pre-season due to weddings and holidays I would have preferred an easier start.
“However we have a fantastic squad for this week and look forward to the challenge of not only finding the pitch in the middle of nowhere, but trying to beat what will be a highly competitive Raiders team.
“We have a number of players making their debut this week, including a new keeper who we are all excited about, as well as some new attacking flair to aid Andy Smith up top.
“We know no matter the result this is only game one and with the new extended league we know nothing will be won in September.
“I would also like to use this report as saying a huge mazeltov to some very important members of our squad namely Rob Simmons and Ian ‘Baz’ Baron who recently got married, as well as the upcoming wedding of our leader at the back David Prager. A huge Mazel from all of us. Finally I would like to wish Richard ‘Scotty’ Alexander good luck on his half marathon which he is running for on behalf of Haven House a brilliant cause that I hope everyone can contribute too.”
To be the best you have to beat the best. That is what Stern will be telling his players before kick-off.
But when all is said and done, I can’t see NLR losing in their own back yard.
JC team news: NLR’s David Domb is recovering from a fractured metatarsal sustained at the end of last season. Joe Tankel could be in line to return from injury, while Joel Levitt, Matthew Geppart and Alex Faktor could all make their Raiders debuts.
Venue – Brunel, Ref – Martin Fox, KO – 10am

RCUK FC vs REAL HENDON
Two teams with title aspirations go head to head on Sunday when new boys RCUK FC host Real Hendon.
I’ve been advised to have a little punt on RCUK who have done good business over the summer and on paper at least, they have a squad that is second to none.
Joint-manager Dovi Vogel told JC Sport: "What we want from this season's opener is a win and nothing short of a win.
"We believe Real Hendon will be up and around the top four this season and we want to get a jump on them very early.
"We have a full squad this week with the exception of Jake Lewis. However, we are boosted by a great late signing in Akiva Zniemer who undoubtedly will cause Real Hendon problems on Sunday."
Real Hendon have experience on their side and will confident of handling anything the home side can throw at them.
A point apiece wouldn’t be the worth outcome for either set of players in what should be an entertaining contest.
Venue – Ludgrove Playing Fields, Ref – Mike Cowan, KO – 10am

DC Prediction: RCUK 2 Real 2
