MACCABI LONDON LIONS MASTERS vs HENDON UNITED SPORTS CLUB A
If you have to make a decision between Chanukah shopping or watching a Maccabi football match on Sunday, it’s a no-brainer for me. Get down to Rowley Lane on Sunday morning for the Peter Morrison Trophy showdown between holders Hendon United Sports Club A and Maccabi London Lions Masters.
The Lions team will be like a Who’s Who of Jewish football, with Russell Corin lining up against his regular Sunday team. In defence, former Wingate & Finchley captain Andrew Myers and Adam Myeroff will be looking to keep Hendon hot-shot Dovi Fehler in check, while the midfield battle between Alex Levack and Ari Last will be worth the admission fee alone.
It is a match Hendon boss David Garbacz is clearly relishing. He said: "We are well aware that this is potentially a very tough match. The Masters squad are full of talented players including a couple of ex-pros as well and we are expecting a real battle against a team who will be hugely motivated for this game.
"The sub-plot of course is Russ Corin will be turning out for the opposition which to be honest is unsettling for him and for us as well. Arthur Caplin will play in goal." Garbacz joked: "Arthur is a great understudy to have but if Russ has a blinder there will be every chance Arthur will keep his place for the foreseeable future!
"I expect them to be very good technically but we will definitely have the edge fitness-wise. We currently have the best two players in the league on current form in Zac Lewis and Avi Korman and the team as a whole is playing with great confidence. But if Zac is even half as good as he was last week then he will be impossible to stop."
“This match promises to throw up some very interesting and exciting match-ups but we have won this competition each year for the last three years and we certainly will not be relinquishing anything lightly. It should be a great game though – we are looking forward to it.”
The Lions are flying in their league; they have quality all over the park and are dangerous opponents for Hendon. But manager Dan Jacobs knows they have their work cut out on Sunday. He told JC Sport: “To draw a Premier Division side, let alone the leaders, and three times reigning champions, was not what we wanted – as you know we simply enter in the hope of getting an extra couple of games in.
“But I am looking forward to seeing first-hand the best of the next generation as hear they’ve some fine young players.”
Gaffer Garbacz believes his team’s superior fitness will hold the key on Sunday. I can see it coming down to small details.
JC team news: Rocky Spitzer is unavailable for Hendon who will give fitness late tests to midfield duo Greg Corin and Yoav Lebens. Regular keeper Russ Corin is playing in goal for the Masters so Arthur Caplin will take the gloves for the Reds.

FAITHFOLD A vs CAMDEN PARK
Camden Park are still riding on the crest of a wave following their memorable victory over Redbridge Jewish Care.
That performance would have taken a lot out of Max Saunders’ men but they have had a fortnight to recover physically and they will be ready to go again ahead of the trip to first division Faithfold.
Camden have been playing well for a while now, but until the RJC game result had not been going their way. It’s important they use that result and performance as a launchpad for the rest of the season.
Ahead of kick-off, Camden boss Max Saunders told JC Sport: “Aside from our long-term injuries, we have a couple of first team players unavailable on Sunday. However, we will manage with the squad we have.
“We are very much looking forward to getting our Peter Morrison campaign up and running. One of our greatest memories as a team in recent years was our trip to Manchester to play Flixton in the quarter-finals a few years ago where we won in extra-time.
“It was a weekend to remember and we are hoping to have the opportunity to experience something similar again this year.
“We won't underestimate Faithfold - a team with a lot of history in the MSFL, and we will be sure to turn up Sunday ready for the challenge.”
Faithfold have been a mixed bag thus far. They remain dangerous opponents for anyone in the MGBSFL and will be quietly confident of springing an upset.
Jonny Gahan and Michael Field will be big players for Faithfold on Sunday in a game that will be won and lost midfield.
But when all is say and done, I can see Camden progressing.

SPEC FC vs FC TEAM A
FC Team are favourites to progress on Sunday as they sit comfortably above SPEC FC in the table and they have already beaten Ricky Lawrence’s men this season.
Connor Perl was the chief tormentor of SPEC that day. He has taken to life at FC Team like a duck to water and he will be looking to lead the visitors into round four. And they will be determined to get their humbling 7-0 battering at the hands of Hendon last week out of their system.
SPEC go into the game on the back of their first win of the season. Daniel Amram, Ricky Lawrence and Ben Kaye were the marksmen as they over-powered Woodford and it will take a similar effort to send them through on Sunday.
I can see this being a war of attrition and that’s possibly why Richard Jaye has been selected as the man in the middle.
The Morrison could save FC Team’s season and that’s why I’m tipping them to nick it.

MGBSFL PREMIER DIVISION
BRADY MACCABI vs OAKWOOD A
Elimination from both cup competition pre-Chanukah has come as a major blow to everyone connected to Oakwood A.
Having reached the finals of the Peter Morrison Trophy and Cyril Anekstein Cup over the past couple of seasons, managers Dan Kristall and Ric Blank must have been spending most of the week lifting chins off the floor following their shock defeat against second division RC UK FC that dominates the backpages of this week’s Jewish Chronicle newspaper.
Both Kristall and Blank missed the tie but they must’ve re-read the dreaded message from club captain Adam Levine that would’ve said something along the lines of, ‘lost 0-1, sorry”.
Upon hearing the news, Kristall gave an honest assessment of what lies ahead for Oakwood between now and May. “Our season hangs by a thread,” he told JC Sport. “We must win almost all of our entire league fixtures to have a chance of silverware.”
But it’s not all bad news for Oakwood fans. The club this week announced the arrival of former Lions and Hendon midfield maestro Ben Lauffer and they were on the verge of “landing another huge signing this week in the hope of winning the Prem”. Kristall went on to say: “This player has the potential to be the best in the league.”
Brady can’t buy a win at the minute. Consecutive defeats against Redbridge, Raiders, Camden and Hendon all followed the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Oakwood which came courtesy of a deadly double from the ever-dangerous Sam Cantor.
Had it not been for the goals of Reiss Mogilner, they’d be deeper in relegation trouble and they really need a big result.
But the presence of Lauffer and another new face will ensure the Oaks get the result the doctor ordered.

MACCABI LONDON LIONS A vs REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE A
Redbridge will be looking to close the gap at the top when they make the long journey to the Lane.
Jon Jacobs’ troops have had plenty of time to reflect on the Camden defeat and they were somewhat disappointed Athletic Bilbaum withdrew from last week’s scheduled cup match. That would’ve given Jacobs an opportunity to rotate his squad and give a run-out to one or two squad players, but they should have all the big guns back for this important game.
Russell Goldstein was the hat-trick hero when RJC mauled Lions 5-1 on the opening weekend of the season. But the east Londoners will find things tougher second time around as the Lions have had a change of management since.
Will Beresford masterminded a thrilling comeback in the MLL Morrison derby last week. Charlie Rubin’s late winner ensured there was no upset.
Beresford has plenty of respect for RJC and told JC Sport: “It will be a tough game against strong opposition.”
It’s hard to know what kind of team the Lions will put out but I can see them coming away with a share of the spoils.

NORTH LONDON RAIDERS A vs WOODFORD WANDERERS
Raiders were another top-flight team who struggled to see of lower league opposition in the cup last weekend, but I don’t foresee any problems on Sunday.
Every week a different player seems to step up and that’s the beauty of the defending champions. Liron Mannie has been their star performer but on Matchday 13 Nick Lewis stepped up and denied Redbridge B a famous win.
Although they sit 14 points off top and will not give up on retaining their title until it’s mathematically impossible.
Ahead of the game, NLR boss Dan Shafron told JC Sport: “We're looking forward to getting back to league action this week.
“We've had a difficult couple of weeks with injuries and availability but I'm happy that we're back to full-strength for the visit of Woodford.
“We had a good result against them earlier in the season when we were still finding our form and I expect a very similar display this week.
“With Liron, Stocky, Dinks, Marks, Dave Cohen and Benny Ellis going forward, it creates good competition for places in the final third, and with Nicky Lewis now amongst the goals in spectacular fashion last week, I expect it to be the start of many more goals for him too.”
Manager Daryl Kay missed Woodford’s defeat against SPEC FC. He told JC Sport: “I’ve spoken to the boys and it sounds like it was a mixture of bad luck (going down to 10 men so early), and a couple of bad mistakes from a few of our players.
“Sunday will be tough, we’ve got a few injuries to some big names but I’m hoping the boys can put in a good shift against, what I think are the best team in the league.
“We’ll be using Camden’s win against Redbridge as inspiration for sure!”
Raiders had a field day against Woodford last time, crushing them 6-0. I think Sunday will be equally as one-sided.

HENDON UNITED SPORT S CLUB B vs FINCHLEY CITY
There are few more ambitious teams than Finchley City in the MGBSFL and Oli Sade’s late winner last week has given them huge belief.
Eyebrows were raised when they were elevated into Division One for their MGBSFL debut, but after a couple of blips, they haven’t looked back.
Sade has been earning rave reviews over the past few weeks and his screamer on Matchday 13 has probably added a couple of zeroes to his price tag. He is one of the hottest properties in Jewish football right now.
Finchley go into the Hendon game with their tails up. Manager Joel Holder told JC Sport: “The boys have been buzzing all week after our stoppage-time win against Blancos.
“Our resilience and determination over the last few weeks has been superb. We must be one of the most in-form teams across all leagues with four wins on the spin and three consecutive clean-sheets.
“We played Hendon last month and were probably quite lucky to come away with all three points. Having said that, our team has improved substantially since then, so I am expecting a better performance.
“Hendon are a good team and cannot be underestimated, but the onus will be on us to manage the game. I think they will find it tough to control Oli Sade who is arguably the most in-form player in the league, but at the same time we are not a one-man team and the collective contribution of every player over the last few weeks has been immense.
“It's a vitally important that we win on Sunday and I fully expect that to be the case if we play to the standard we have recently set."
Hendon lie perilously close to the drop zone and managers Jono Nesbitt and James Neidle know the importance of winning their home matches. The goals have dried up in recent weeks and they will have to adopt a cautious approach on Sunday.
Hendon joint-manager Jono Nesbitt told JC Sport: “We are missing our two first-choice centre-backs this week so will be looking to our fringe players to step in and try and make an impact.
“We had a week off last week and arranged a friendly against Temple Fortune. We ended up winning that game 7-0 which will hopefully give the team some morale and certainly gives us some positive form going into this game.
“In the reverse fixture we played some very poor football some of our worst all season but we were still unlucky to lose 3-2. If we can get the ball down and play our game I believe we can get something from this fixture.”
Finchley will go for the jugular on Sunday and unless the likes of Sade and co have an off-day, I can’t see them failing.

Brixton and Bilbaum are preparing for a relegation six-pointer of monster proportions.
Brixton have lost every match they have played this season, mostly by wide margins.
Bilbaum were forced to withdraw from the Jewish FA Cup last weekend and it’s clear they are prioritising league survival.
The return of Ben Bell and Jacob Brunner will change the dynamic and if they hit the ground running they will have too much for Brixton.

Jason Stein has labelled Sunday’s home match against Los Blancos as a must-win. Simple as that.
Surprisingly, that was all I got out of him in a breezy visit to the club’s training ground. Was it something I said … or wrote, perhaps? My conscience is clear.
I believe the Oakwood players owe Stein a performance following their game against Scrabble last Sunday. He felt his team didn’t turn up in a game he desperately wanted to win, but all he got was an error-ridden display.
Stein now has some big decisions to make and they look to bounce back and stay in the promotion mix.
JC team bews: Stein has assured fans that Oakwood will put out a “similar side to the one that faced Scrabble”. A midfield of James Frener, Aaron Searle, Daniel Selwyn and Daniel Seligman “should be more than capable of winning”.
Los Blancos fans felt their team did enough to earn a point against high-flying Finchley last Sunday. Nick Grosse’s boys had their hearts broken in stoppage time – the third consecutive league match they’ve lost by a one-goal margin.
Grosse believes their luck must change sooner or later, but I have a sneaky feeling for Oakwood.

REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE B vs NORTH LONDON RAIDERS B
Sam Rank has described Sunday’s meeting with title rivals Raiders as “a blockbuster of a game”.
The east Londoners will be putting their 100 per cent record on the line after registering five straight victories. They will need to be on their guard as NLR will be eyeing revenge after falling victim to Rank’s glory boys 4-0 in October.
Rank told JC Sport: “Sunday’s blockbuster game featuring two title challengers will be a cracker.
“I noticed Jonathan Adelman watching last week’s cracker against the NLR A team, and I would imagine he would of been very impressed on the game he saw.
“When we met NLR B earlier on the season, we played a very good game. We pressed high, moved the ball well, and finished our chances. It was a great all-round performance.
“I was aware Raiders were missing some of their strikers - Nicky Woolf and Jake Gilbert. I would imagine these players will be returning for Sunday fixture. But since the last game against them I feel we have strengthened in all areas.
“To win a title, you must have depth, commitment, high ability and most importantly the right mentality and attitude. I feel the RJC B boys have all these assets in abundance.
“If the boys play at the same level as they have been in training and on Sundays, I feel we will win this game. But this game will be another battle. It will be a great game for the neutral.”
Raiders will be looking to regain top spot on Sunday. Gaffer Adelman told JC Sport: “With Woodford pulling out of our cup game last weekend I was able to watch our A's v Redbridge and was very impressed with what I saw from the Ilford boys.
“When we played them earlier in the season we didn't have anything like our proper squad out so it was difficult to judge how good Sam's team are. After last weekend I'm in no doubt.
“We will take a strong group to Essex and we'll relish taking on the stand-out team in our division. We know we will have to match the physicality and intensity Sam will demand of his troops.
“If we want to be in the mix for promotion, we have to get a result on Sunday. Sam will want to maintain their 100 per cent start to their league campaign so I'm anticipating another rip-roaring Raiders/Redbridge clash."
Now it's time for the talking to stop. There’s little more for me to say other than a high-octane affair is on the cards and it should be a great advert for the league.

Debutant scorers - Kane Hopps, Daniel Orgel and Scott Kay all are available, while Joe Jordan returns. Captain Brad Gayer is fit again and will be pushing for a starting place. Sunday is a hugely pivotal day in the race for the Division One title. While second-placed Raiders travelling to fourth-placed Redbridge, table-toppers Lions B will be looking to preserve their slender advantage when they take on Scrabble.
The teams shared two exhilarating encounters in Division Two last season and Sunday will be no different. The first meeting this term was a real thriller and another five-star contest is on the cards.
Both teams are packed with quality from back to front. Lions have stepped up a gear since last season, with Josh Bloom and Benji Weinberger key to their plans. And with Michael Kenley featuring regularly on the scoresheet for Sam Marchant’s men, this is a challenge the Lions will relish.
Scrabble produced their Sunday best against Oakwood last Sunday. Josh Bentley helped them fly out of the blocks in a game where Brandon Sassoon, Josh Bharier, Danny Sherman, Dan Stock and Elliot Espinoza also impressed.
I’m not brave enough to tip either side to lose so will happily sit on the fence on this occasion.

The Boca boys have revenge on the agenda. Anton Nyman told JC Sport; “We played FC Team in the cup not so long ago and they won it with a lucky goal with the last kick of the game.
“We've improved a lot since then so I want more on Sunday. We have a couple of returning players including Josh Cinna, so let's see a rare Boca win prediction this week Danny!”

FAITHFOLD B vs REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE C
Faithfold can move to within a point of Redbridge C if they get the right result on Sunday.
Louis Taylor, Jeremy Teacher and Sam Garson were their goal-scoring heroes in the cup last week as they reached the fourth round of the Peter Morrison Trophy for the first time in a decade.
Having missed out on the JC Manager of the Week prize, David Garson and James Stanton will be looking to impress the JC panel of judges once more. And being at home, one has to think Richard Fogelman will be there or thereabouts in terms of the headlines once again.
Redbridge out-classed Boca last week with a 5-1 demolition of Boca. Barry Green, Dan Lipman, Jacob Kaye, Craig Phillips and Ben Oldstein fired the bullets that lifted them into the top three.
Full-back Dan Lipman produced arguably his best display in a Redbridge shirt and he will be out to impress again.
Goals will be on the menu on Sunday in a game that will come down to which team takes its chances. It will be a thriller.

HERTSWOOD VALE vs L’EQUIPE
Top against bottom – an away banker, or so you would have thought. But L’Equipe boss Nick Stern is ever the professional and clearly taking nothing for granted ahead of the trip to Borehamwood.
Stern told JC Sport: “We are certainly not resting on our laurels after the shocks that were witnessed last week throughout the league and cup.
“The message to my team this week has been ‘don’t let standards drop, keep 100 per cent focused for these last two games before Christmas and then we can finally relax’.
“Last week saw Hertswood pick up their first points of the season so we know that they are certainly a team on the up.
“We cannot and must not take them lightly as we don’t want to be caught out. We know full well that any team can pull off a result and no games are easy just asked Oakwood last week!
“RCUK did the division proud but it echoes a message I have been saying each week if we don’t turn up fully switched on and as long as Messi or Ronaldo don’t turn up then any team is beatable and now that we are top of the league the target is fully on our back for the rest of the year.
24 points separate the teams going into the game meeting for the second time this season. Mark Smith, Max Martin and James Mandell eased them home 3-0 earlier in the season. But over-confidence is something you never associate with L’Equipe teams who will go about their business in a purposeful manner.
“We have to keep the same mentality up as we have all season and we will come away with a victory,” said Stern.
“We want to continue this great run we are on and end 2016 with two more victories starting this Sunday.”
Vale head into the game on the back of a deserved point against Fortune thanks to Ben Mandel’s famous late leveller. But I have no doubt they will find things tougher on Matchday 14.
Hertswood joint-manager Jacob Emanuel told JC Sport: “We hope keeper Yaacov Goldin brings the same form that helped us to get our result last weekend.
“Let's not beat around the bush. We've played nine in the league, drawn one and lost eight. L'Equipe have played nine, won eight and drawn one. But we're going to welcome them to the fortress with the intention of ending their unbeaten run.
“This is the MGBSFL. Anything is possible.”
Brave words indeed but I can’t see this being a coupon buster and would be surprised by anything other than a L’Equipe win by at least a couple of goals.
JC team news: Hertswood welcome back captain Josh Wood and Ollie Brill into the squad for the first time in six weeks, looking to build on what we achieved last week. But they're sweating on the fitness of Ben Mandel.
L’Equipe have a number of absentees this week, including Max Martin (suspended), Nick Stern, James Bell, Scott Bennett and Rob Simmons. However, they have both Smith brothers playing and crucially captain Mark Singer is back from his romantic weekend away to lead his “true loves” to victory. David Prager is also back from his latest injury and will be managing in Stern’s absence.

NORTH LONDON RAIDERS C vs RC UK FC
RC UK FC dominate the backpages of this week’s Jewish Chronicle following their glorious cup victory over the mighty Oakwood A, and rightly so.
Jonti Aremband booked his place in RC UK folklore after scoring a sensational winner in a performance where several boys in pink and blue played the game of their lives. The challenge now, as player-manager Avi Markiewicz pointed out soon after the final whistle is, they must play to that level on a consistent basis.
RC UK are handily placed to push for promotion. They have a bad record against the fancied teams in the division but be determined to put that right, starting on Sunday. Thus far their best two results have come in the cup competitions against higher-division opposition.
Raiders have gone two league games without victory, but managers David Domb and Sam Rose are determined to turn things around. I’ve heard whispers about Big Sam and Roy Hodgson being interesting in managing in the MGBSFL, but chairman Jonny Adelman is confident in the dynamic duo.
Injury problems have held NLR back thus far and the first 20 minutes will be crucial on Sunday.

Sunday is another banana skin for promotion-chasing Temple Fortune. They slipped up against Hertswood Vale last week, with their fans and probably players having felt the game was won.
Jordan Sharifian maintained his excellent goal-scoring run, with Gab Stone chipping in with the other.
Nothing less than three points will do for Fortune and that’s the message Simon Linden will be drilling into his squad before kick-off.
Linden told JC Sport: “We are keen to get back to winning ways on Sunday against a very unpredictable Hendon who did very well against Catford last week.
As Linden touched upon, Real earned an impressive result over the Cats. Player-manager Chaim Gothold led by example with both goals in a 2-1 win. Gilad Kestenbaum and Rafi Addlestone were outstanding at centre back and Benny Goldberg looked lively up top. Goalkeeper Dov Owen produced the saving grace, securing the points with a last-ditch save.
I can see Sunday being an end-to-end contest and am tipping the Fortune boys to edge it.
JC team news: Eshad Rahiv is set to return to the Fortune squad this week but Brett stead and Michael Goldberg are doubtful.
