Less than 24 hours after his appointment, it seems the jury is already out on Guy Luzon. Reports of reservations amongst the players and fans were doing the rounds, with supporters taking to Twitter, saying the club is “ruined” and describing the decision as “pathetic”.
Luzon gave the perfect response at his first press conference. He said: “When I arrived in Belgium 18 months ago a lot of people, like the media, fans and clubs, said I didn’t have European experience and don’t know the Belgian league. In the end that opinion had changed. I want to do the same here.”
* In the aftermath of the Ched Evans saga, I spotted a headline in the Oldham Chronicle mentioning that Simon Corney wants out. This isn’t new news.
I bumped into the Oldham owner outside Tesco’s in Edgware six months ago, and he told me much the same. Indeed Corney has been keen to sell for some time now, but with the club close to his heart, he is keen to pass it over to the right person, not just the highest bidder.
The Evans story put the club in the public eye, and with a brand, spanking new stand recently opened, now seems like a good a time to sell as any.
Corney said: “I’ve been here for 12 years and just don’t have the same interest any more. I love the club and love the game but enough is enough."
* Love is in the air at Redbridge Jewish Care after club secretary Richard Bronzite and Craig Sandford announced they were getting engaged, although not to one another. Richard popped the question to his sweetheart, Melissa Ross, while MGBSFL hard man Craig got the nod from Adina Berkley during a break in Mexico.
* Dan Cohen has bid farewell to his Oakwood teammates ahead of his latest American adventure. Cohen bowed out on a typically high note after making the save of the week in the Peter Morrison Trophy defeat against Lions Spartans.
* A developing sport has taken the UK by storm, and I just couldn’t resist having a go. Footgolf courses are popping up around the country, and I was joined by Gabriel John and Dan Cohen, as well as expert Ben Clarke, with the loser buying dinner.
I beat Dan and Gabriel over the front nine, before the goalposts shifted and Cohen exacted revenge in the second half, as well as the following round. Gabriel lagged home in fourth place and evidently misplaced his wallet somewhere on the course at Little Hay in Hemel Hempstead.
