You have heard of the concept – a one-man team. Well, 14-year-old Dana Murray will be flying the flag as the only representative of the Team GB gymnastics team.
The Redcar Gymnastics Club member will reportedly be the first GB competitor in the sport for almost a quarter of a century.
Her mum, Rosie, is from Israel, and Dana qualifies through her scores in the British Challenge Cup over a two-year period.
Club coach Diane Richardson believes the Bydales School pupil will do herself proud in the prestigious global event. “Dana has represented the North of England at club grades and represented the club nationally for the last two years,” she said.
“She was also with us in Maryland in the USA in 2005, competing and training with our partner club. But this is the icing on the cake for her gymnastics career.
Middlesbrough based Dana has been part of the 160-member Redcar Club since she was five. Training four times a week under the supervision of Richardson, she will be working hard on some new routines ahead of the Games, where she will appear on the bar, beam, floor and vault.
“She is mid-table in this country and if she can rise above that at the Games I will be ecstatic, because there will be some of the world’s best gymnasts there.”
