Israeli clubs experienced mixed fortunes on the opening round of Europa League group matches on Thursday night.

Having been eliminated from the Champions League on penalties, Maccabi Haifa were the only winners of the three representatives.

A strike from Mohammed Gadir took the Israeli champions past AEK Larnaca at the Kiryat Eliezer Stadium.

Haifa top Group J after Steaua and Schalke played out a goalless draw at the Stadionul Dr Constantin Rădulescu in Romania.
