Manchester Wolves registered their biggest victory in their short history after easing to an 11-1 demolition of Barnstoneworth in the Chairmans Cup.
And so it came to pass ... there was always going to be a day when the defence, midfield and forwards combined to give a team a complete pasting. Today was that day…
In previous games there have been aspects of the performance that have left the team slightly underwhelmed despite victories.
The manager, Darryl Lee, had longed to combine Jamie Rose and David Chaytow in midfield since seeing them in tandem in June and now nearly five months later he finally got his wish.
In addition a quiet word with Gino Re prior to the match assuring him of 90 minutes saw a sparkling forward performance rewarded with five goals.
The writing was on the wall early on when Rose crashed a 30-yard drive against the post,to be followed by Gino narrowly missing after a great cross from Yaffe.
An array of finishes saw a 5-0 half-time scoreline where Gino had already scored a first half hat-trick. Even the infamous “bus queue” set piece saw skipper Jenkinson score after numerous attempts in previous weeks had narrowly missed. Haffner had added his first goal with a cute finish at the far post.
The team did not let a bad injury to an opposition player, requiring an ambulance, affect their rhythm.
At half-time the talk was of respect for the opposition but the need to be clinical as form is not something that can be turned on and off. The scoring continued unabated.
The second half was pretty much one way with Yaffe scoring a fine hat-trick, Gino adding two more and Cartwright finally finishing after umpteen chances-the golden boot battle is now on between Cartwright and Re.
Thankfully a Marshall foul tackle saw the opposition score a penalty and so the manager can still think there is room for improvement.
Next week sees the next round of the cup as Gresford travel from Wrexham to the Abbey Stadium.
Man-of-the-match: Rose and Chaytow dominated midfield, Yaffe scored a fine hat trick, but Gino Re with five goals is the MoM
