Maccabiah 2013 review: GB Junior Cricket

Unsure of what a good score might be in the conditions and after an excellent warm up session, Team GB skipper Grant Reingold won the toss and elected to field.

Max Sugarman and Barnaby Graff opened the bowling and both struggled to find the right lines on a Flicx surface that none of the side had any experience of playing on. Once they found their rhythm they really put the Israeli batsmen under pressure, Sugarman breaking through with the score on 17, bowling Raoul Diveker for 1.

Sugarman was superb, quick and hostile, and moving the ball away from the right-handers. The second wicket fell soon after, Yarden Diveker edging Graff to second slip where Steven Reingold took a brilliant one-handed catch. Barnaby struck again in his next over, Noah Lipschitz holding the catch at mid-off to remove Bergman.

31-3 was soon 39-6, with Jonny Gould rewarded for bowling full and straight with the wickets of Gozlan and Kamarliker, and Sugarman getting the second wicket his spell deserved, knocking out Borgorkar's off stump.

Schachat showed some obduracy with five off 47 balls, but found the spin of Sim Cohen, Grant Reingold and Steven Reingold tough to deal with. Grant caught and bowled Foley-Comer, before brother Steven took the last three wickets, through smart catching from Sugarman and Gould, and a quick stumping by Adam Meyer.

Overall Team GB were excellent in the field, with only one boundary off the bat in the entire Israel innings.

After an excellent lunch, Noah Lipschitz and Jack Winton opened the batting, Lipschitz in particular looking to be aggressive early on. They took the score to 16 before Winton edged behind a good delivery from Yardsn Diveker for 1.

Steven Reingold joined Lipschitz and was busy from the off. The pair ran well and manoeuvred the ball into the gaps, moving the score along to 49 when Lipschitz lofted Sampson to mid-on and was caught for 16. Steven Reingold was out shortly after, top-edging an attempted pull off Schachat for 18.

Grant Reingold and Jordan Urban ensured there would be no late drama, and eased GB over the line with 25 overs to spare.

Steven Reingold was named man-of-the-match by the umpires, for his 3-4, 18 runs and magnificent catch. Special mention to the three 12th men for doing a terrific job at getting water/towels etc on and off the field.

Team GB's next game is July 21 against South Africa at Ashdod.

South Africa prevailed in an enthralling encounter at Ashdod on Sunday.

South Africa won the toss and chose to bat. After a steady start the tie burst into life with two wickets in the seventh over. First, Noah Lipschitz ran out Flax with a one-handed pick up and throw from mid-off, before Schaffer picked out the same fielder off Max Sugarman's bowling, Lipschitz taking a good sharp catch.

Gordon and skipper Savadier rebuilt well, putting on 28. Once again two wickets fell in quick succession, firstly Gordon picking out the inspired Lipschitz off the bowling of Steven Reingold for 21, before Girnun was caught by Josh Oehley off the outstanding Sim Cohen. The same combination accounted for the fifth wicket, and when Lipschitz accounted for his second direct hit run-out of the game to leave South Africa 89-6, Team GB were dreaming of a famous victory.

Savadier was still there, though, and batting very sensibly. Emdin was bowled behind his legs by Steven Reingold to put South Africa at 111-7, and a target of below 130 looked on the cards, but Savadier struck the ball well, taking his score to 67 not out, and the team score to a very competitive 148 from their 40 overs.

GB's reply began brightly as Noah Lipschitz and Mikey Ettlinger put on 22 in four overs before Ettlinger edged behind off Lazarus for 1. Lipschitz fell shortly afterwards for 10, LBW to Emdin. A cluster of two quick wickets was followed shortly by a cluster of three quick wickets, Steven Reingold caught at third man off Emdin, Grant Reingold caught behind off Lipman, and Adam Meyer unluckily judged LBW to a ball that hit him high on the thigh, leaving GB 36-5.

Jordan Urban and Barnaby Graff tried to rebuild, putting on 22 before Graff edged Cohen behind. Urban followed shortly afterwards, caught off Cohen for 15. Sim Cohen went in search of runs but only found the fielder at mid-on. Max Sugarman showed some character in an innings of 17 not out but it was too little too late. Josh Oehley was yorked by Freeman, before Josh Frey was run out for 1.

Team GB's second group game against South Africa saw GB's batters fail to produce again and South Africa secure a convincing victory.

South Africa won the toss and chose to field, and after a steady opening stand between Noah Lipschitz and Jack Winton of 15, Lipschitz was bowled for 8. Steven Reingold joined Winton and the pair were going well before some calamitous calling saw Winton run out for 8. This prompted a middle-order collapse as four wickets fell for five runs - Grant Reingold caught behind for 2, Steven Reingold run out for 5, and then Adam Meyer LBW for 0.

From 31-5 it would be extremely difficult to set a match-winning total, and so it proved. Mikey Ettlinger and Jonny Gould fell with the score on 41 and 47, then Joe Nyman and Josh Oehley with the score on 53. Max Sugarman showed that there were no demons in the pitch or the bowling with some controlled hitting taking him to 25* before he ran out of partners when Josh Frey was unluckily adjudged LBW.

73 was always going to be inadequate but GB were determined to take some scalps with them.

Sugarman was quick and hostile with the new ball, and unlucky not to pick up a wicket. GB managed to spill several chances along the way, with Schaffer and Godfrey chancing their arms. Steven Reingold picked up the wicket of Schaffer, a smart stumping from Ettlinger, with the score on 32, before Josh Oehley and Joe Nyman picked up a wicket apiece late on.

South Africa played well, and deserved to win, but all of Team GB's batsmen know that they failed to turn up on the day.

Team GB secured their place in the junior cricket final with a comprehensive victory over Israel at Lod.

GB won the toss and elected to bat on a scorching hot day. Jack Winton and Jordan Urban got the innings off to a decent start, putting on 30 for the first wicket, before Urban was trapped LBW by Gould for 15.

Steven Reingold and Winton built steadily with Winton's innings full of deft deflections and Reingold striking the ball well. They took the score to 65 until Steven drove at a slower ball from the impressive Bergman and was bowled for 23.

65-2 was immediately 65-3 as Noah Lipschitz cut at his first ball and was caught behind. Skipper Grant Reingold followed shortly afterwards, caught behind off Bergman, and Ettlinger's stay was also brief, bowled by Sampson for 6. When Winton eventually departed for 40 with the score at 107, Team GB looked in danger of failing to set a challenging total.

Jonny Gould and Sim Cohen took the score to 127 until Cohen was harshly adjudged LBW to a ball he definitely edged. When the eighth wicket fell at 133, Gould caught at square leg off Bergman for a valuable 21, it looked likely that Team GB would fail to bat their allotted overs again.

Barnaby Graff and Joe Nyman batted superbly, with Graff in particular playing some fantastic shots. 70 runs came in the final 10 overs, Nyman eventually bowled by Gould for 15 in the 40th, and Graff finishing on 48* from just 41 balls with six 4s.

GB finished on 204/9 from their 40, Bergman the outstanding bowler for Israel with 4/27 from his eight overs.

The Israel reply featured some outstanding performances. Graff and Josh Oehley both picked up wickets in their first over, Graff demolishing Kamarliker's stumps, and Yarden caught behind by Mikey Ettlinger off Oehley. Israel could never get going, with the bowlers giving little away.

Oehley took his second wicket in the sixth over, Schachat caught well at square leg by Urban for 4. It was Oehley again with the fourth, Gozlan bowled for 1. Nyman replaced Graff, and was successful in his first over, Ettlinger taking a sharp catch stood up to the stumps. Oehley took his fourth wicket in his sixth over, trapping Bergman LBW. Grant Reingold followed Oehley and bowled Lewis in his second over to leave Israel 23-7.

The end came quickly as Joe Nyman had Peretz caught behind, another neat catch from Ettlinger. Sim Cohen finished things off, bowling Foley-Comer and Gould to further bolster his outstanding tour figures. Israel were all out for 29 to take Team GB through to the final on a high.

South Africa secured gold in the 19th Maccabiah Games Junior competition with a powerful and dominant display over Team GB at Hadar Yosef 2.

Team GB skipper Grant Reingold won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision that looked a bit dubious with GB 2-1 at the end of the first over, with Jack Winton playing around a quick straight ball from Adam Lazarus to be bowled for 0.

Jordan Urban played nicely for 15 before the same bowler accounted for him, nicking off to South African skipper Savadier at second slip.

Steven Reingold and Noah Lipschitz looked to be rebuilding well, taking the score to 47. Steven was the victim of a dubious looking LBW decision, being struck on the thigh pad by Freeman, for 6. Brother Grant fell first ball, going back to a grubber of a ball which bowled him. Freeman struck again in his next over, Adam Meyer completing what had been a disappointing tournament with the bat for him with another duck.

GB were suddenly 47-5 and in danger of folding against the South Africans for a third time. Jonny Gould and Lipschitz had other ideas and constructed what at first was a fairly obdurate partnership, which bloomed with some terrific running between the wickets and some powerful hitting from Lipschitz.

From 47-5 in the 15th they put on 67 precious runs, with Lipschitz going through to a terrific half century before Gould was LBW to Savadier’s excellent offspin. Max Sugarman slog swept a boundary but was run out from short third man. Lipschitz tried one big shot too many having just hit his second maximum and was caught and bowled by Emdin for 62.

Despite some smart cricket from Barnaby Graff the tail was unable to wag as it had in previous matches, Sim Cohen bowled by Freeman to give the seamer figures of 4-12, and Josh Oehley run out going for a suicidal second run.

South Africa were aggressive from the off in their reply, Godfrey and Berman-Levy latching onto anything slightly off line or length. They put on 41 in five overs before the introduction of Steven Reingold’s off-spin saw Godfrey bowled for 23.

Player of the tournament Josh Gordon was careful initially but increasingly expansive as he and Berman–Levy took the game away from GB. Only Sim Cohen was able to exert any control over the batsmen with his canny left-arm spin. Berman-Levy eventually fell for 38, caught well at deep mid-wicket by Barnaby Graff off Grant Reingold’s leg-spin. Schaffer was caught by Steven Reingold off Max Sugarman with 12 needed, and it was left to Flax and Gordon to ease South Africa to victory with 17.2 overs to spare.

SA were an older, bigger side, who hit the ball extremely hard, and ran out deserved winners.
