Maccabi GB Futsal’s season went from bad to worse as they were crushed 11-0 by Helvecia.
MGB's third game of the season was always going to be a tough fixture, against the five-times National League champions. Going into the game, MGB had suffered heavy defeats in their opening league matches and, with Alex Olcot, Josh Phillips and Scott Shulton all out of action, this was to be an unwanted hat-trick of games that MGB Futsal would not have their most experienced team available.
MGB gave a good account of themselves in the opening stages, with player-manager Jon Kurrant leading counter-attacks and rattling the post. Helvecia had not got into their rhythm and MGB were defending deep, frustrating their opponents and looking to continue the barrage on the counter.
The deadlock was broken after just seven minutes and the floodgates opened thereafter, with Helvecia racing to a six-goal lead before half time.
After the break the home side’s superior passing game opened up the MGB defence at will and they ran in a further five goals.
Maccabi GB Futsal’s next opponents are Baku - the only professional side who have progressed into the main draw of the UEFA Futsal Cup. They have the likes of Barcelona in their group and will undoubedly pose another huge test for the Community’s top Futsal side. The match is on November 2 at the Olympic Park Copperbox, 12:30pm KO.
