A stoppage time strike from Damjan Bohar left Maccabi Tel Aviv with it all to do after they went down 1-0 to Maribor in the Champions League third qualifying round first leg.
The Israeli champions were on course for a goalless draw when Bohar headed home in the 95th minute as the hosts boosted their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
3-0 winners over FC Santa Coloma in the previous round, Maccabi started well and only the reflexes of Jasmin Handanovič denied Eran Zahavi what would have been a crucial goal inside two minutes.
Maribor went close either side of half-time, with Agim Ibraimi firing inches wide and Juan Pablo saving impressively from Sintayehu Sallalich.
But Bohar broke Maccabi hearts, converting a precision cross from Amir Derviševič from the left hand-side to break the deadlock and give Maribor the upper hand ahead of Tuesday's second leg.
