London Lions remain joint top of the Herts County Senior League Premier Division table with the systematic dismantling of Mill End Sports, winning 3-0 at Clarence Park.
Goals by Adam Stolerman, Ben Lampert and Ben Ellis saw off the spirited resistance of the visitors who had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping the scoreline respectable.
Lions came close on 12 minutes when Lee Cash drove in from the right only to see his shot fly wide of the near post. Mill End’s keeper then smothered the ball as Adam Stolerman tried to round him
Playing at their new home, the Lions continued to play some neat football as Ben Lauffer, Daniel Stanton and Ben Lampert got hold of the midfield.
The deadlock was eventually broken in the 30th minute. Danny Berg gave an excellent through ball to Cash on the right. The speedy hitman reached the byline and crossed the ball to Stolerman who prodded the ball home.
Number two arrived eight minutes later. Wide on the left, Daniel Levenfiche drove past his marker. His shot was parried by the keeper into the path of the onrushing Lampert who smashed the ball home.
The Lions did not want half-time to come as they seemed to be enjoying the wide pitch and the free flowing football.
As the second rolled on it seemed as if the Lions were content with the 2-0 lead and they lost a little edge to the game. Cash and Stolerman were replaced 20 minutes from time by Ben Ellis and Andy Glynne respectively.
It took Ellis 12 minutes to score his first senior goal for the club and he did it in style. Picking up a loose ball 18 yards out, he cut inside his marker and curled a lovely right foot shot past the diving keeper.
The goal rounded off a well deserved victory after a very good performance.
With Lions sitting proudly joint top of the league, albeit with only five games played, talk of winning the title is rife. Manager Tony Gold said: “The title is a possibility but the season is very long.”
“But I still believe we have to step up to the plate when the tough times come and we are yet to prove we can do this”.
“Obviously very pleased with the result and the way players played today”.
“I’m very proud to manage this team because they have a lot of quality and if we continue to take that quality into every game then you know what they might even surprise themselves, because I know how good they can become”.
“Today each and everyone of the lads put in a shift but I thought Danny Berg really showed what kind of a player he can be with a performance of energy, drive and quality”.
“The important thing now is to make sure we continue to build on this start and to make sure the players don’t get carried away. We have a tough game against Hertford Heath who beat us 3-2 in our own back yard last season
