Maccabi London Lions have stolen a march on their MGBSFL rivals ahead of the new season by appointing former Premier League star Mikele Leigertwood as their coach.
Having played in the Championship for Reading last year, Leigertwood is now undertaking his coaching badges and is benefitting from some practical experience helping Lions’ young Sunday team while he learns his new trade.
Leigertwood was informed of the vacant role by former Lions player Sam Sloma.
He said: “I started my playing career at grass roots, so it makes sense to do the same now I am working on my coaching career."
The Lions received a reprieve from relegation to Division One after a league restructure, and manager David Pollock believes Leigertwood will lift the squad. He said: “We are delighted to have him involved and we received some great feedback after his first session on Sunday."
Leigertwood said: “I want to get the team organised with David Pollock for the campaign and then coach them once a week after that. Whilst the group is committed and responding to the ideas we have, we hope we can make a difference.
"The core players look good so we just need to get things organised and give everyone the level of coaching they need. The facilities at Rowley Lane are much better than I could have expected."
